UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns tennis team captured a 4-3 win over instate opponent Nicholls State on Tuesday afternoon. The men improved their season record to 3-6.
In singles action, UL and Nicholls split with three wins each. The biggest win for the Cajuns was sophomore Piotrek Banas’ 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 defeat of Radu Ionescu at No. 1. The victory clinched the match for the Cajuns.
Other singles wins for the Ragin'Cajuns came at Nos. 5 and 6. At No. 5, sophomore Jorge Delgado bested Sami Mouline 6-1, 7-6, while freshman teammate Murilo Martins defeated Alex Gasca-Silav 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6.
The Cajuns picked up the doubles point after collecting wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Delgado and junior Arlen Domoney topped Eric Fisher and Phenyo Matong 8-6 at No. 2. Banas and freshman Stefan Hawkins bested Mouline and Gasca-Silav 8-2 at No. 3.
Men’s coach Mark Jeffrey said he was extremely pleased with the team’s performance.
“This was one of Nicholls State’s most competitive teams,” Jeffrey said. “The difference in the match came down to the doubles point. I am really proud of Piotrek Banas. He is now 3-0 in the spring, and he was able to clinch the match at No. 1 singles.”
The Cajuns will be back in action on Wednesday, March 5 when they take on Alcorn State at Cajun Courts. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
