Thread: Devin Figaro

  1. UL Basketball Devin Figaro

When Lafayette High's Devin Figaro was handed the point guard duties out of necessity last season, there were plenty of expected growing pains.

Coach Clifton Brown anticipated that going in and tried to be as patient as possible.

Since that time, Figaro has become a more mature senior and grown into the position beyond any of Brown's early expectations. In fact, Figaro has actually become the glue that holds the No. 2-seeded Mighty Lions together during the program's finest season in over two decades.

Figaro and the Lions hope to push one big step closer to their goal of the Top 28 when they host No. 15-seeded Brother Martin at 7 tonight in a Class 5A regional contest.

"I've been playing basketball since I was 4 years old and I thought I knew everything,'' Figaro said. "I guess I just got more mature as a senior and I decided to start listening to my Dad (former LHS and UL star Kevin Figaro). He knows how to play the game.

  4. UL Basketball Figaro's play on defense was key

With 1:39 left in the Class 5A state championship game in the Cajundome on Saturday night, the 5A Top 28's single-game scoring leader Stevie Howard found himself sitting on the floor.

His arms were draped over his knees and he blankly stared into the crowd, knowing his season was over.

Howard, who had scored 43 points a few nights before against Huntington, had fouled out with only 10 points. In fact, Howard was only able to muster two points in the second half during a 75-55 loss against Lafayette High.

On the other side of the court was a smiling, bright-eyed Devin Figaro, the man who had been commissioned to hold Howard's scoring output to a minimum. He not only did that, but matched Howard's 10 points with 10 of his own.
