Ragin' Cajuns in All-American Golf Tourney

SPRING, Texas-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team concluded play in day one of the All-American Intercollegiate at the Tradition at Cypresswood in Spring, Texas. The Cajuns were led by Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) who finished the first day in a tie for eighth place. UL (596) finished the day in seventh place as a team, but just nine strokes behind the tournament leader UALR (587). The Cajuns enter the final round of competition within five strokes of Baylor (592), Lamar (593), tournament host Houston (593), Middle Tennessee (594) and New Mexico State (595). The Ragin’ Cajuns struggled in the opening round of the tournament turning in a team total of 303 (+15). In the first round, Thomas Petts (North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) led the Ragin’ Cajuns with a two-over par 74. He was followed by Carrey who finished one stroke behind Petts with an opening round of 75. Seniors Morgan Landry (Lafayette, La.) and Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.) both turned in rounds of 77, while Dustin Petit (Luling, La.) finished the opening round with an 82. UL rebounded in the second round with a team score of 293 (+5). All but one player improved on the second round. Carrey improved by three strokes to card an even par round of 72. His three-over par performance on the day placed the junior in a tie for eighth place after day one. Petts was the only Cajun whose score didn’t improve. He turned in a second consecutive round of 74 to finish the first day of competition in a tie for 12th. Landry and Smith both improved by three strokes to finish round two with a pair of two-over par 74’s. The duo tied for 28th after the first day of the tournament. Making the biggest move for the Cajuns was Petit who improved nine strokes from round one to two. The transfer carded a one-over par 73 to move into a tie for 51st. SPRING, TX - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team moved up four spots in the final day of the All-American Intercollegiate at the Tradition at Cypresswood in Spring, Texas. The Cajuns were aided by a stellar performance by Thomas Petts (North Vancouver, British Columbus, Canada). The freshman turned in a final round score of even par to finish the tournament in a tie for third place. Petts score helped lift the Cajuns into third place, five strokes behind tournament winner Middle Tennessee and four strokes behind UALR for second. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished a stroke ahead of New Mexico State, and tournament-host Houston rounded out the top five. The Cajuns had two other players finish in the top-25 in the tournament. Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) carded a final round score of 76 to finish tied for 10th, while senior Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.) closed out the tournament with a 76 as well to place in a tie for 22nd. Morgan Landry (Lafayette, La.) and Dustin Petit (Luling, La.) finished the tournament tied for 35th. Petit tied Carrey and Smith with a final round score of 76, while Landry turned in a scorecard of 80. Playing as an independent was B.C. Thibeaux, III (Lafayette, La.). Thibeaux withdrew from the tournament in the final round. The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action on March 10-11 with the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classics Golf Tournament at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette. The tournament hosted by the Cajuns, kicks off on Sunday with a College-Am. The tournament tees off on Monday morning and continues through Tuesday.
