PRACTICE #1...The first practice of the spring was conducted in its entirety inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility. The practice fields were a little too soft and the coaches decided it was better to stay on the turf inside.

The team cruised through 11 periods, ending as scheduled at 5:15pm.

“It was a little wet outside today,” head coach Rickey Bustle said. “We’d like to go outside (Saturday morning) if the conditions are better.”

The Cajuns worked in shorts and helmets and will do so again on Saturday. Practice is scheduled to begin at 9:45am. The team is expected to add full pads for Sunday afternoon’s practice.

“It was a great first day,” Bustle added. “We had a lot of individual periods teaching fundamentals. There is a big emphasis this spring on fundamentals.

“We want to go back to square one with everybody and do a lot of individual teaching.”

The Cajuns practice plan has already been set for the first three practices. Saturday’s practice itinerary is nearly identical to Friday’s opener.

“I want to see the guys doing things right and getting better everyday,” Bustle stated.

  2. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns open spring drills

UL quarterback Michael Desormeaux expressed relief after the Cajuns recently finished a two-week conditioning period called "Red Dawn," in which they went through 6 a.m. workouts run by strength coaches.

Let's just say the rising senior enjoyed the opening of spring football practice on Friday, even though soggy conditions forced the Cajuns inside the Leon Moncla Practice Facility for the entire session.

"It's always great to get out here for the first day," Desormeaux said, with a smile. "It's exciting, still."

The Cajuns worked in shorts and helmets in their first practice and will do so again today at 9:45 a.m. UL, back on the field after an 89-day layoff since the end of the 2007 season, is expected to go in full pads for Sunday's practice.

  3. UL Football PRACTICE REPORT: SPRING FOOTBALL Practice #2

The Cajuns worked both outside on the practice fields and inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility on Saturday morning. Temperatures continued to rise from the low 50’s at the start of practice to nearly 60 degrees at its conclusion around 11:50am.

The team practiced for a second day in shorts and helmets with a similar 11-period workout to Friday’s session.

“I’ve been really pleased with the last two days,” new offensive coordinator Ron Hudson said. “I thought the guys have done well making adjustments to the little things the coaches have changed.

“All the young guys and redshirts are getting into the action quickly. The effort is there, the focus has been there.”

The Cajuns have their third offensive coordinator in as many seasons, but Hudson has been on the Cajuns staff during that span and is tweaking the offense rather than trying a complete overhaul.

“We are very similar, but not the same on offense,” he stated. “The goal is to create a tempo that is hard to match. I want the players to enjoy what they’re doing and have fun.”

The practice slate changes dramatically on Sunday, when the team will enjoy their first practice in full pads.

“The offense and defense have not worked against one another yet,” Hudson added. “It will be interesting to see what happens when the guys go under fire.

“Practice will be harder (Sunday) and I’m looking to see who will compete and rise to the challenge.”

The Cajuns are scheduled to start Sunday’s practice at 3:15pm. The 10-period slate will conclude around 5:15pm.

  4. UL Football PRACTICE REPORT: SPRING FOOTBALL Practice #3

PRACTICE #3...The Cajuns strapped on the pads Sunday to enjoy their third practice of the spring.

The 10-period practice was intense, as the offense and defense collided for the first time this spring. There were several physical drills that pitted battles between players.

“Both sides of the ball came out with a physical attitude,” Cajuns defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier said. “The offense tried to bloody our nose and the defense responded.

“We are slowing things down and helping the players understand the little things. (Sunday) was a good practice, but we have a long way to go.”

The offense-defense rivalry was evident from the early periods until the end of practice. The players brought an increased intensity to Sunday’s workout.

“Our physical drills help to establish the tempo of practice,” Fouquier added. “We tell the guys on both sides to win the individual battle. It doesn’t matter what scheme we are running, it comes down to the individual battle and beating the man in front of you.”

NCAA rules do not permit tackling in the first three spring practices, so an even more physical day is expected during Monday’s practice in full pads. Practice is slated for 3:30pm.

    Good question.

PRACTICE #4...Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns practiced on Monday for the fourth time in as many days. UL worked in full pads during the 10-period slate. The full contact practice included live tackling.

“There were a lot of bodies banging today,” Cajuns offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Ron Hudson said. “We were dinged up pretty quick, but as a whole we were more physical than in the fall.

“I was very pleased with the offensive performance, although the defense got after us in the final period.”

The Cajuns had a pair of intense and physical periods in the middle of practice and finished with a team period of first-and-10 situations.

“The last two days have been very physical,” Hudson stated. “In the past, the coaches would have to whip the players to work hard, but we haven’t had to do that this year.

“The players are doing a better job of pushing themselves and challenging themselves. They are making some good competitive practices and working together as a team.”

The team will get a much needed day of rest on Tuesday and return to practice on Wednesday at 3:30pm.

INJURY UPDATE: X-Rays confirmed that All-Sun Belt center Chris Fisher suffered a fractured left hand during Sunday afternoon’s practice. Although Fisher did complete the practice, he will likely miss the rest of the spring season. The Cajuns moved defensive tackle Bobby Fails – who was just three practices into his transition from offensive line to the defensive front – back to offensive guard. Hudson stated that he will use Kyle Plouhar and Matthew Autrey at center for the rest of the spring. The Cajuns do not have enough offensive linemen on the spring roster to provide a third center. The team does have three offensive linemen signed for the fall.

    Default SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE #5..

    SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORTS

    PRACTICE #5

Wednesday’s practice was a day for the defense. It seemed as though five practices in six days caught up with Cajuns offense.

UL worked 10 periods, with the final period consisting of extended live work.

In the live work, the defense won nearly all the battles and walked off the field in celebration. The offense left the field beleaguered.

“I think we started the day a little slow,” passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jorge Munoz said. “Our pass skeleton was bad and that carried over (to the live work).

“We had mistakes by everybody, but if you are going to have a bad day, then the fifth practice of the spring is the best time to do it. Hopefully, we can be better the next time out.”

The second team offense and defense saw a majority of the action in the live work.

The second team offense had trouble containing the defense’s pass rush. One of the few offensive highlights came from Tyrell Fenroy, who broke a 20-yard run on his first touch.

“We have a good portion of the offense already in,” Munoz added. “I saw some heads spinning out there and if you have to think, then you are not reacting.

“Those are excuses and we know that as coaches. (On Friday) we are going to lock in on some simple concepts and assignments that will allow our guys to play fast and execute (on Saturday).

Friday’s practice will be a review, with the team focusing on plays for Saturday’s scrimmage. The scrimmage at Cajun Field will begin at 10am.

ps. will expect the good web-boss to fix this up at some point later (grins)

Default whoaa.. can't wait until jon fixes the above.. (smiles)

the #1 thing that has me most excited and i've been saying this ever since i first saw it was the move of luke aubrey to TE..

i have not talked with luke yet.. and i hope to soon.. this can pay dividends.. for team as well as himself if he truly wants it to.. i just feel it

ps. i'll know more after visiting with him if and when i get the chance.. right off the bat it's a plus for him in that he has gone from a slow wr to a fast TE (smiles)
and yes he had a nice gain today as well as being open deep up the middle but michael threw deep to ritchie on the other side (incomplete)

pss. might be tough telling from afar the difference between rickey and tim.. the coach been hanging with tony for sure (tee-hee)

  10. #10

    Default ooops forgot..

to mention the cajun coaches had a nice "social" with the high school coaches from around the area.. rickey even allowed a few mcneese fellows to stop by and watch, visit and allow gerald to fill them in on what he has been up to ..

ps. who else is guessing that gerald, being "the last one on board" ... is getting all "the real good jobs" (normal coaches duties) .. IE: morning wake-up calls and such.. (smiling)

welcome back coach broussard.. a few things have changed since you been here, ey?

    Bil,

Thanks for the posts. Hope you get a chance to go out and see the guys work out. Love to hear your takes; especially wrt the passing game.

    Shof

  12. #12

    Default thanks shof..

one of the big "goals" of the spring, i would guess is to find out which of our red-shirt freshman "sunshine state boys" will separate themselves as the # 2 qb.. michael, tho durable, didn't make the whole season last year..

i've only seen practice 3 and 4, and from afar, if they switched their numbers ( 11 and 16) i wouldn't be able to tell who was who.. no doubt, they know what's at stake for them and i am guessing some of what coach munoz said about players, “I saw some heads spinning out there" .. covered these two... as usual one will do better and you think "okay someone moving ahead" only to come out next day and that same guy seems like he couldn't find the locker room without a map..

the qb position has a lot of scenarios a guy has to deal with.. plays, formations, pressure to lead and perform, plus getting the prettiest girl on campus to like you are amongst some of them.. every camp, of every age and level has had this same scenario to work itself out (if not every offseason, they don't go thru too many before it's that favorite question) ... whois number 2?

it always plays itself out as is said "the cream rises to the top" and it will here also, and if by the end of spring both guys haven't progressed in the position, it will just open the speculation of the new guy coming in this summer..

ps. #11 is chris masson and #16 is brad mcguire (best of luck to both)
