Thread: A New Kind of Focus

  1. UL Football A New Kind of Focus

Two days after falling 31-28 to rival UL Monroe, Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth expressed pride in bringing a Sun Belt Conference championship – even if it’s actually, at least for now, only a share of it – to UL.

“But we would sure like to win it outright – even though we sort of consider it ‘outright,’ since we won head-to-head,” Hudspeth said during his weekly media gathering Monday.

Interesting to me that he never seems to fault the defense or defensive scheme, but instead talks about our being too fat and not intense enough to put teams away and we can't put too heavy a burden on our QB. Also said our special teams were superlative, but didn't mention the breakdown on the fake punt. Total focus appears to be on offense, while defense continues to struggle mightily. Our struggles in games we won and lost seem to center around ineffective offense instead of an inept defense. At what point does HUD address defensive schemes that aren't working and needed changes in this area?

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the statement "we sort of consider it "outright" since we won head to head." Never envisioned that being said by Hud. That's akin to letting your enemy "hold your rope".

We know the rule how the conference looks at it. Bottom line, win Saturday and nobody else but members of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajun football team can say 2013 Sunbelt Football Champions.

This is all "coach speak". HUD seems like the type of guy that will never address a bad situation. He will always focus on the positives. Trust me, he knows what type of players are in that defensive backfield and he addressed the defense with a coaching change this year by hiring Willis. I expect to see a bit more aggression in the bowl game.
