JONESBORO, Ark. - Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns tennis team narrowly defeated Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State 4-3 on Saturday to improve to 3-1 on the season.
In singles action, the Cajuns picked up wins at the Nos. 4-6 positions. Junior Angela Dangond bested Renee Branker 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, while sophomore Marina Ruiz de Gauna topped Emily Laing 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5. Freshman Mia Gordon helped out the Cajuns cause with her 6-0 victory over Leydi Zora at No. 6.
The Cajuns fought hard at Nos. 1-3, taking all three matches into three sets. ASU’s Maria Oprea topped freshman Julie Mazinova 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 1. Freshman Kim van der Horst fell to Paula Chelminska 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 at No.2, and sophomore Myrthe Molenveld was defeated by Rone Van Wyk 2-6, 7-, 10-5.
In doubles action, the Cajuns picked up the point after winning at Nos. 1 and 3. At No. 1, Mazinova and Molenveld bested Van Wyk and Branker 8-3. Gordon and van der Horst topped Zora and Menna Kamal 8-3 at No. 3.
UL’s Bridget Marcovich and Dangond fell to Oprea and Chelminska 8-7 (7-5) at No. 2.
The Cajuns will next compete on Sunday, Feb. 10 when they face conference opponent Arkansas-Little Rock in Little Rock.
