Dr. Savoie needs to lead from the front, rather than remain in the tent.
That is what this is all about. This Saturday isn't going to resolve the name issue... but it may very well set the direction going forward. No person within the ranks of UL fans will be upset to see "Louisiana" on our scoreboard. Many, however, will be extremely irritated to see "Ragin Cajuns" or "Cajuns" on the scoreboard... against ULM. ULM will see it as a victory against our branding name and declare it a victory. And I believe they'd be correct.

It is unacceptable for Dr. Savoie to duck for cover on this one. If he decides it is prudent, for whatever reason, to not upset ULM or the SBC... he needs to explain it to the UL fans ahead of this contest. To me, if we are afraid to support our complete athletic branding from within our own camp... it is time to openly change the mission. To do this under the boot of ULM is an all-time low for our university.

We clearly have retreated. A total ULM victory, shame on us.

When he was being interviewed by the committee for the job as a UL President he stated "we know our place"

Even though I didn't like it at the time I sure didn't think he meant under the boot of ULM.

ps The hearings were recorded, the quote is provable. I am not sure if I can produce a copy, I recorded some but not all of the hearings. The audio of the quote was online for a while.

    SUCK IT, HOAX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just talked with T-Joe and he asked me, "What I'm supposed to do? Benson and Bruno are on my ___ about having 'Louisiana' on the scoreboard!". I told him to print out a little envelope label with "at Lafayette" on it and stick it under "Louisiana" on the scoreboard. He took a long pause and said, "Do you think it will work, J1M?". I said, "It works for me.". And he said, "If you put 'Louisiana' on your left butt cheek like you always do... will you put a small 'at Lafayette' on your right butt cheek?". I said, "Only if you let me sit on Karl's face and make him chew on my floss.". And T-Joe laughed and said, "I've always wanted to make Karl chew on your floss!". And I said, "Me too!".

It's all going to work out on Saturday! I have some special sauce on my floss!

They've all demonstrated for the past 30 years that they simply will NOT refer to us as UL or Louisiana, even in athletics. This battle can not be won. This name issue is having a negative effect on our university's progress. LSU and their many fans will never accept our name as UL, nor will any of our fellow UL System schools. For this reason, most of the state's legislators DO NOT SUPPORT our cause. As a state funded university, this is not a good situation. We have a nationally known brand in "Ragin Cajuns". We should put our efforts into promoting it instead of beating the same old dead horse that we've beaten for 30 years……...Or not.
I don't agree with your conclusion but everything you said is true. We're not winning, or even making progress with the name battle. I think many people here are fooling themselves into believing we're winning. But we're not. I travel around the country for work. And outside of the Acadiana bubble so many here live in no one calls us UL. I think the battle can be won but it we can't keep doing the same thing we've been doing for the past 13 years while expecting different results. It's not going to magically work. Martin Hall needs to rethink it's strategy.

After so many years of having the "New" name and to not have the desired name (Louisiana) not resonate with ESPN, AP, Sports Illustrated, The Advocate, Nola.com, not to mention the former university SID and others who now opine in local, weekly rags is the single biggest mistake possibly ever made by the "smartest people in the room" who used to run this university. Sure, winning has certainly helped, but the more success the RC have, the more important this name thing will become. How has all of the bastardization of title, University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Laf, ULL, LA Laf, etc) benefited anyone associated with the school? U LA LA work for anyone here? Of course not....
These people who run the university are supposed to be smart. I know Joe S. is a very smart, intelligent guy. You would have to be the village idiot to believe that anything other than UL, (sometimes even ULL) or Louisiana isn't the right and correct choice of non-official names. For me, a 25 year media marketing guru, something is telling me there is more to this story, especially in light of what's been going on the last few weeks. And I don't think its a case of Doc S and his immediate staff not caring. I'm 5 states removed from Lafayette and I can see that. Now, the Comm and Marketing Office may not care, the new "smartest people in the room" may not care, but there are thousands and thousands of others who do care that the university stop accepting these mistakes from national media, like ESPN. Something about all of this, including those who "don't care" doesn't seem to make sense in light of ESPN referring to the school as they like, with no accountability or recourse by the University. Sort of like IUPUI baskeball. You know the school is in Indiana, you're just not sure what all these letters mean. Same thing.

I do, but only because I lived in Indianapolis for 11 years.

You need to stop doing that.

See, this is where i think your argument dies a little. In retrospect, we've really only pushed hard promoting Louisiana for about 4-5ish years out of those 30, including the past 3 years. We're no closer? Pretty sure we're a whole hell of a lot closer than we were 5 years ago.

Just received this communique for posting on this forum. Let me know if you have any interest in joining our ranks.

There are many ways to join The Dark Side.

The most common way is to support an Indy move.

Another way is to endorse another name change to end this once and for all.

I and Lord Vador await your allegiance.

Whether they care or don't care, ultimately ESPN's decision to use UL or ULL is not Martin Hall's to make. What accountability or recourse are you expecting the University to take? Seriously, what are you expecting Martin Hall to do? Because as far as I know they've done just about everything in their power to convince ESPN to use Louisiana.
