Our Mascot?

Texas A&M Aggies.......Mascot = Collie

Tennessee Volunteers.......Mascot = Blue Hound

Louisiana Cajuns.......Mascot = Catahoula (State Dog)




By not using the Tri-fleur and going with the lone FDL, people think we are copying the Saints.

By calling our stadium The Swamp, people think we are copying Florida.

By having a Gator Mascot, people will think we are copying Florida.


All we have to do is embrace those things that identify with the State of Louisiana and Acadiana ike the Tri-Fleur and the Catahoula that make us unique. We are making this way too hard.

Running from truth is never a good solution, honesty creates a better identity.

Just because something was stolen from you doesn't mean you need to latch on to the next best thing.

The Catahoula is the best idea.

Catahoula's are visually so varied as to almost be unidentifiable as a breed.

The necessary learning curve a Catahoula requires is almost insurmountable and requires an attention currency that is already being spent elsewhere.

Turbine, there are places that raise Catahoulas that are predominantly of a red color. It would be no big deal to locate a dog when we would need a replacement that was colored red and white.

Seriously few inside and fewer outside of UL will get the breed, much less the connection.

Alligators on the other hand are 100% associated with Louisiana. I found that out when I was 5 years old visiting relatives in Nebraska and later when relatives from Colorado and California were passing though.

Guess what was high on their list to see? Not dogs.

Doesn't matter that Florida is gators or that their stadium is called swamp. There are many schools called tigers and probably stadiums called Death Valley or other similar nomenclatures. Gators are notoriously Cajun country icon and UL Cajun field has a history behind being called the swamp. and our mascot lives in our current swamp! We need to make this happen for next year. HUD can make this happen. Someone get his attention and get this done. I'll put up a grand to help fund. The Ragin Cajuns are becoming a nationally known team and has what it takes to be unique and generate a lot of enthusiasm and new fans outside of area. Everything that adds value to our brand needs to be taken advantage of NOW. Geaux Cajuns!!!!!!

You might be able to have both.

We can ask Boise when the come to The Swamp about Buster Bronco and their tee fetching dog.

The only thing we should retain the pepper for is to use as an apostrophe on Ragin'. We don't even need it for "Louisiana's" anymore as we dumped that "s" too. The red gator & catahoula are both good (prefer the reptile over the dog). But please, no human based mascot. It will breed 2x the negative reaction than positive.
