As much as I would love to go back to NOLA for the weekend, I think playing an ACC team in Shreveport is better for our program. Next season the highest ranked Gang of Five gets an auto bid to BCS (I think). So in order to be ranked, a program has to be winning but also have to be perceived as a good team by members of the media. The SBC might be "stronger" but if the media and other coaches still think that it is the worst league in FBS, UL will not get much support (which is why UL getting out is so important). So I think to impress media we need to play a strong perceived team to give us media momentum into next season. If UL is only going to make less than $100,000 in bowl revenue in any Bowl, wouldn't it be better for UL to invest into next season where we could potentially make that up with new fans and boosters, more season ticket holders and of course media and therefore coaches and other fans support for a successful 2014 Campaign.
Beating Tulane in NOLA is great for recruiting along the Gulf States and it would be potentially our third win over a future Big East/AAC team. But are we for sure that is who we would play?
What may be equally important is expanding our fan base. The casual fan is not coming with us to Mobile or Shreveport, but they will come to New Orleans. If we can get them to their first game, hopefully the atmosphere and experience will get them to come back again and be there for the long term.
I will be wherever we end up. I don't want to be in NOLA vs. a FAU etc... Beating the snot out of Tulane with 45,000 Cajun fans will help with recruiting. Beating a BCS in Shreveport will also help with recruiting and might get us ranked! Beating NIU in Mobile will almost certainly get us ranked but we will not put many people in the stands. It's only a two hour drive from me so I can do it with a work week looming. Three short years ago we would have played the Somalia Bowl in beautiful downtown Mogadishu! I'm giving thanks to UL and Coach Hud!
+100%. Amen! I will Geaux wherever they send us. But my preference is N.O., even with Ladd stadium only 60 miles from home. Hell, if we were qualified for a BCS bowl, I would want it to be the Sugar Bowl before any other.
Now let's keep the Suck Dynasty from even thinking of anything but the toilet bowl. Beat ULM!!!!
Agreed Sid.
I would also extend your line of thinking in the event Rice is the opponent, but I do not want to face UNT or MT. Very little to be gained in too many areas to select that option over facing a ranked school or a big name school in another Bowl.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I'm sure unt and middle don't want to play us either, you think their fans would be excited about traveling to watch that game? The bowls are aware of this, they will try their hardest to get us a good matchup and vice versa
