Thread: Vacant land question

    Default Vacant land question

I think this has been discussed before but I can't remember the answer. The land behind the sorority houses on the road that runs on the side of Backham Coliseum. There is a nice black fence "which by the way is exactly what they need to put around cajun field" and brick "sponsored" entrances in a couple of locations. The area is HUGE. I can't believe that they are just using this area for soccer practice.. Anyway, I was just curious if anyone knows about this. thanks

The land belongs to the Intramurals department. It was voted on about five years ago to fix the area to include fields for intramural softball and flagfootball. As of know only softball is played because there is no lights. So pretty much its wasted land.

Supposed to be for intramurals but they never put up the lights.

Thanks for the answer sham . Everytime I pass that area I think "man something big is going to be built there. Oh well, wishful thinking. I really like the black fence though.. I wish they would use that type for the football field.

I think the reason it hasn't happened is due to opposition by residents near the area. They have used the area for their own personal use, such as walking their dogs, for many years and have come to feel that it is "theirs".

They got the permission from the neighbors but have to put the lights faceing towards cajunfield. The only problem is that when they made the plans to fix the fields they decided to do it in phases, Phase one was done close to 4 years ago and phase 2 is the new wiegth room which is stalled because of costs. So phase 3 will not be done for a couple of years hopefully

There is also talk of making a decent little driving range there for the Golf classes and the students in general to use. This would be great. I took a golf class there a while back and we had to go to any golf course that would take us. Then they put us on some makeshift range, but bet your butt they charged us full price for use. As for the neighbors, they need to get it through their head, UL land is just that UL LAND. Get over it, and find some other place to let your dog crap. And try picking it up for a change.

The stretch of land from the Sorority/Cajundome area to the Horticulture/Blackham area is the most misused, underused, underappreciated piece of land the unversity has.

Is that the land where the vegetable gardens used to be?

I live right next door to that field and use to run through the corn fields on what was once called the Experimental Farm. A few of my neighbors were involved with the neighborhood council (composed of a now retired Lafayette city developer and the current Lafayette City Planner) that discussed the plans for the field. The plans that were drawn up were actually really nice; the softball/baseball fields were permanent and split by trees and sidewalks, I believe there was also a soft running track. The only complaint, that was rectified in the drawings, was the reversal of the lights which were directed towards the neighborhood houses.
