Eastern Illinois football offensive coordinator Jorge Munoz has accepted a position as quarterbacks coach and passing coordinator at Louisiana.

“It’s a Division I opportunity and about double the salary so it’s kind of hard to say no to that,” Munoz said.

Louisiana is a NCAA Football Bowl Division program.

Munoz was promoted to Eastern’s offensive coordinator last season in his third year on coach Bob Spoo’s staff.

Isn't Eastern Illinois the school Sean Payton and Tony Romo came from? If so, that's good company.

"Jorge Munoz was promoted to Offensive Coordinator in March of 2007 after being named co-Offensive Coordinator during the summer of 2006. Under Munoz’s direction the Panthers proceeded to run a more diverse offense with four players earning first team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors on offense including OVC co-Offensive Player of the Year Vincent Webb and third team All-American Micah Rucker.

The Panthers ranked 18th in the nation in run offense and either ranked first or second in the OVC in rushing offense, total offense and passing efficiency. Under Munoz’s balanced attack EIU nearly had a 1,000 yard rusher and 1,000 yard receiver in the same season as Webb finished over 1,000 yards for the third straight season while Rucker had 966 yards receiving to go along with 13 touchdowns.

Munoz joined the EIU staff in 2005 coaching the Panthers wide receivers. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach following the 2005 season.

Prior to coming to Eastern Illinois, Munoz spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach at Charleston Southern (2003-04). During the 2004 season Charleston Southern wide receivers ranked first, second and fourth in the Big South Conference. The Buccaneers passing offense ranked first in the Big South and 17th in the NCAA.

After coaching stops at Southeast Missouri (1999-2000) and Bethany (KS) College (1997-97), Munoz earned his first offensive coordinator position at Anderson College in Indiana. His 2002 team set six offensive school records, ranking fifth in NCAA Division III for passing offense at 323 yards per game. That same team averaged 33 points and 451 yards of offense per contest.

His 2001 team was just as good winning the Heartland Collegiate Conference championship with the nation’s six best passing offense. That team set 22 school records scoring 36 points per game and averaging 466 yards per game.

A 1998 graduate of Bethany College, Munoz was a two-time All-American quarterback. He went on to play one year in the Arena Football League with the Albany (NY) Firebirds. He was also a multi-sport standout at San Diego Hilltop High School.

Munoz serves as the Panthers recruiting contact for north and central Florida, western Illinois and the St. Louis area.

He and his wife Erin, have two children - Ava and Alex."

  7. UL Football Munoz moves up to the next level

Eastern's offensive coordinator headed to Louisiana

CHARLESTON – For the second straight year Eastern Illinois is losing its offensive coordinator to the next level of college football.

Jorge Munoz has accepted a position as quarterbacks coach and passing coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette, an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision program.

“It’s a Division I opportunity and about double the salary so it’s kind of hard to say no to that,” said Munoz, who helped Eastern to the playoffs the past season in the Football Championship Subdivision, known previously as Division I-AA where the Panthers also qualified in the previous two years.

Munoz was promoted to Eastern’s offensive coordinator last spring in his third year on coach Bob Spoo’s staff after line coach and offensive coordinator Mark Hutson went to Tulane.

Even when Hutson was Eastern’s offensive coordinator, Munoz did the play-calling for the 2006 playoff team.

Munoz also is to call the plays in similar situation for coach Rickey Bustle’s University of Louisiana team that was 3-9 last season.

That helped bring Munoz to Lafayette, where the offensive line coach is Ron Hudson who was on the same staff as Munoz at Southeast Missouri in 1999-2000.

This makes it sound like the OC job is Hudson's.

It's what Sean Payton was at Dallas, prior to taking the HC job with the Saints.

Honestly, what is an OC? What are the qualifications? Is it the play caller? Is it the author of a team's offensive scheme? Is it the guy who makes personel decisions?

to me, it may or may not be all of those things, but as long as you have coaches who know their jobs, and do them well, then why do you need anyone to be known as the "OC"? I think that in the current environment of football (College and Pro), this is something that you're seeing more often.

In UL's case, Hudson is the OL coach, and probably has a fair amount to say about the running game and the passing game, wrt play design and so forth. Munoz will be doing the play calling, and will be in charge of developing the passing game. And overall, it's Bustle's scheme and he probably oversees everything anyway.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I looking at it to simplified. Maybe we do need a guy that is an OC that oversees everything. Maybe Bustle being too involved with the O, and not involved enough with the D, is what has hampered this team.

Track & Field Coach Munoz - UL's new Passing Coordinator sure looks good on paper!

What do you want from a QB Coach/Passing Coorinator/OC?

A winning record? Eastern Illinois went 8-4, UL 3-9

A balanced attack? EI had 2300 yards passing last season, and 2293 yards rushing.

A high completion percentage? 64.3%, started had 65.4%, UL was 54.8%

    A good ratio of passing TD's to INT's? 13 TD's to 5 INT's, UL was 12 TD's to 13 INT's

A system that spreads the ball around? 11 receivers with 3 or more catches, 12 players carried the ball rushing, UL was similar.

A system that uses the TE? TE reeled in 26 catches on the season, teams 3rd ranked receiver overall, UL's Belton had 6 catches and ranked 10th on the team.
