Thread: Jerry Luke LeBlanc to lead Joseph Savoie's UL transition team

  1. Alumni Jerry Luke LeBlanc to lead Joseph Savoie's UL transition team

As the new governor's administration is sworn into office, outgoing Gov. Kathleen Blanco's commissioner of administration, Jerry Luke LeBlanc, will start a new job Monday, as well.

He'll return to Lafayette as the presidential transition coordinator at UL to assist UL President-elect Joseph Savoie in investigating the more than 30 recommendations made in an institutional review of the university during the search process.

"He'll be addressing those items that were in the institutional review, setting up work groups with the university and community people to dig further into those recommendations and see if we can come up with some practical implementation strategies," Savoie said.

Savoie will take office in June but is still acting as the state's commissioner of higher education with an upcoming legislative session not far down the road. Outgoing UL president of 34 years, Ray Authement, announced his retirement in April.

LeBlanc's position was announced Friday at a meeting of the UL System Board of Supervisors to swear in board officers. The position did not require board approval, according to Jackie Tisdell, UL System spokeswoman.

This could be enormous for UL.

Jerry Luke, with Edgar "T-Mout" Mouton is one of the smartest people Acadiana has ever sent to the Legislature. And he knows where the money is being poorly used, and how to create accountability.

One caveat: He doesn't suffer fools gladly. But he has mellowed over the past few years.

With T-Joe, Steve, Ken Ardoin, John T Landry-- and if he stays, Jerry Luke-- we will have a team of hardworking, hardball players who will move UL forward very, very fast. CDSU was looking at Jerry Luke, and once again they've been snubbed.

A few months ago, a Corn Doggie said that T-Joe would never come to UL. After all, he turned down Kentucky, he turned down LSU.

Reminds me of a UL faculty member, one of the top people in his field in the world. When he came up here, he decided that he liked it, he's stay unless one of the 'big 5' schools in his field offered him a position (places like UNC and Indiana).

Then he looked at me, smiled, and said "They've all called."

The Weiners just don't get it. UL is special. The Corn Dogs don't understand community, they don't understand loyalty, they don't understand vision, they don't understand that lots of state money and a football team simply aren't enough.

Some people have character. Some people care about quality of life more than money.

Some people just can't be bought.

Fun, with the appointment of T-Joe and Jerry Luke, the whispers of political patronage with the Blanco’s have already started. I don’t have a problem with either; both are clearly qualified to help move this university forward. But the questions are already beginning amongst faculty and non supporters in the area. This transition team will have its work cut out for it in changing some of these people’s mindset.

I don't think anything will change the mindset of the non-supporters in this area. Their minds are made up and they will not allow inconvenient things like facts get in the way of their arguments. Just look at the comments on the DA website. This story isn't up 30 minutes and the usual _____ing was started by "plainjane" and followed by several others. Yet for two days previously, there was a story about political shenanigans at State between dueling factions wrangling over attempts to oust O'Keefe. I don't think there was one comment regarding those political games. (Of course that dealt with academics not increases in football ticket prices. )
