This is the first part in a series of 5 posts, in which we will take a very brief look at each of the potential candidates for Microsoft’s next CEO._ This will not be an analysis if the individual is the right person for the job, but just some background information and career highlights._ Each of the candidates go through a very thorough vetting process by the board, below is a brief glimpse at some of the information they may be looking at. Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft’s board has decided on Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally and internal executive Satya Nadella as the likely candidates who might become the next Microsoft CEO.

Even though the previously reported internal candidate Tony Bates and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop remain in the possible candidates list, Bloomberg reports that they are currently considered less likely to be offered the top job. Preferences remain fluid and other people are being considered and could emerge as front-runners, said one of the people, without identifying any.

According to Microsoft board, an ideal CEO for Microsoft was described as one who has an "extensive track record in managing complex, global organizations within a fast-paced and highly competitive market sector; track record of delivering top and bottom line results. Proven ability to lead a multi-billion dollar organization and large employee base," people with knowledge of the document have said. Source: Bloomberg _

Satya Nadella, is the executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, responsible for building and running the company’s computing platforms, developer tools and cloud services. He is also one of the few rumored CEO candidates inside Microsoft. Speaking at Le’Web, he said that “this meme of digitizing everything is well on its way.” “Over the next 10 years, we will reach a point where nearly everything will become digitized,” wrote Nadella. He added “an ever-growing network of connected devices, incredible computing capacity from the cloud, insights from big data and intelligence from machine learning” will make it possible, and developers that leverage these technologies will lend a hand. Satya “Nutella” Nadella may be Microsoft’s next CEO._ Regardless he remains a powerful person within the Redmond software giant as Microsoft Cloud & Enterprise chief and has reported directly to Ballmer over the last 3 years._ Nadella talked with Mary-Jo Foley about some lessons he has learned from Steve Ballmer. Microsoft's CEO search could be nearing its end. According to a Re/Code report, which cited anonymous sources, the company may finally announce its new CEO next week, and Satya Nadella, VP of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, appears to be the most likely candidate for the job.

Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft board may be announcing Indian born Satya Nadella as its next CEO. It also added that board is looking to replace Bill Gates from his position as chairman of Microsoft’s board. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s board is preparing to make Satya Nadella, the company’s enterprise and cloud chief, chief executive officer and is discussing replacing Bill Gates as chairman, according to people with knowledge of the process. One person the board is considering to take the place of co-founder Gates as chairman is Microsoft lead independent director John Thompson, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the process is private. Even if Gates steps down as chairman, he may be more involved in the company, said two people familiar with the matter, particularly in areas like product development. Time for an update on the never-ending Microsoft CEO rumor-mill; as I am still traveling abroad this will (hopefully) be a short post._ Sources I have talked to tell me the board is split between Stephen Elop and Satya Nadella._ As far as I’m aware, the rumors of dark horse candidate Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg were pretty much total bull____ by Bloomberg._ Kevin Johnson will be a back-up in case something goes wrong, more on this in another post._ I have also heard that Tony Bates is not being seriously considered due to his inexperience, but Microsoft did want to hear his vision (for the company) and ensure that he stayed at the company because of his favorability & connections in Silicon Valley._ Nadella was favored very early in the CEO search among internal candidates, but the issue of who replaces him in his current position has become a sticking issue._ Nadella is currently Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group._ He essentially a mini-CEO in his own...

Based on various reports from Bloomberg, Recode, and many other news publications, Microsoft’s current executive vice president of Cloud and Enterprise group is likely to become CEO of Microsoft.

GigaOM’s Om Malik did an interview with Satya few months back and he published it yesterday. It is an very interesting interview in which Om asks questions like, “What does the future of Microsoft productivity apps and Microsoft's Enterprise business look like, say in 2020?”, “What is your biggest challenge right now from a cloud and enterprise standpoint in the company?” and more.
