Thread: The Book 2008 Football

  1. UL Football Ragin' Cajuns tough in the middle

With Brent Burkhalter out taking care of academic issues, UL's football team shirted around its linebackers for Wednesday's scrimmage to close preseason camp.

Senior Antwyne Zanders moved from the weakside to the middle. Sophomore Daylon McCoy took Zander's spot at weakside. Sophomore Grant Fleming stayed on the strongside.

McCoy made an impact early in Wednesday's scrimmage, ripping the ball away from receiver Jason Chery. Getting such a big play from a non-starter shows the depth the Ragin' Cajuns have at linebacker this season.

"I think they're playing pretty well," UL head coach Rickey Bustle said of his linebackers. "They're making a lot of plays and directing our defense. Those are the guys who are involved in the running game and passing game.

Has there been any consideration for charging the students for tickets to athletic events. I know LSU is a sore spot with everyone but they DO charge the students and there is no rule against that. Charge for student tickets rather than student athletic fees, should offset itself.

How do you guys organize that. Is it a flat fee that is added on to tuition so that ALL students pay? Do they buy All-Sports Passes, or Individual sports passes, for a flat fee? Or do they have to buy individual game tickets? Any idea on what those costs are?

LSU, as I understand, charges students for each event. I looked at their site and students can buy them by game or for the season. USM charges full time students an athletic fee which is separate and apart from tuition. Once the fee is paid then students can get a ticket by presenting current ID. Looks like the difference is USM charges up front for all events through one fee whereas LSU students "pay at the gate" but can elect whether to attend one game or more or even none.

Great Idea but you've got students lining up to get into football games. However, we do not have that following from our student body yet, although I believe it has improved. If you could charge the students who are in the parking lot getting trashed, then we're onto something.

As Zephyr pointed out the student demand is not that great at this time. The extra revenue generated by student fees might make the difference in putting a good product on the field that would drive up that demand. Its kind of a chicken and egg thing. But mostly having the ability to charge athletic fees would go a long way to elevating our total thletic budget and bringing us more in line with our peers in that regard. However, the powers that be seem disinterested in taking up this issue. Now many of us would say that is because the powers that be are more interested in supporting the aforementioned flagship which as you pointed out has a great demand for tickets as well as other revenue sources which make the issue of student fees irrelevent to them. In relation to their $70 MM+ budget the added revenue from student fees would barely be noticeable while for us the amount generated by student fees would be significant in relation to our overall athletic budget that is currently ~$13 MM. Depending on the amount of fees allowed to be charged we are talking in the range of about 10% for them compared to almost 50% for us.

Student fees are an area we need our legislative delegation and area politicians to apply pressure to the board of regents to change.

wow... listen, if we go in there and get beat by any of those numbers it will be a huge disappointment.

Those boys are in for a game, they just dont realize it yet.

Are you going all the way there to see us lose? Not me, cher.

We have to befuddle the QB and contain Fletcher not to mention taking full advantage of scoring opportunities or it'll be a long ride home. Am I ready for a spot at an ESPN "analysts" desk yet?
