If you are thanking him for the win forget it LaRyan Gary won the game for UL. Gary and Gradnigo, and we didn't have to pull a shirt for the win.

    Weak Z,

To the other guy, and other dejected fans that post negative comments on this board: do you really think burning a redshirt bad? Do you really want this guy to play by himself when he is a senior? Let the coach decide, it is his job. We have no idea who is ready and who is not. What is better for the team and what is not. It is so much easier just to post "fire him, fire her", "stupid move, stupid call". If we had Saban down here and he lost to ULM you would say the same thing. Get behind the team, stay behind the team or stop posting your hate.

We have fine young men and women that want to play, and coaches that are trying to make a difference. Oh and BTW Cajun are 1-0 in SBC.

How is it weak? The redshirt was yanked off of JD in Sept 93. It basically saved a coaching career. Definitely saved a season. Maybe this turns out the same way?

Z, he is not telling you that your response is weak. He is saying that pulling the redshirt was a weak move. He seems to think we would have won the game had Bureau not played as Gary and Gradnigo had good games with Gradnigo the big star. I do not think we would have. The last time we won a game with a late three pointer was at McNeese when Chris Cameron hit one in Dec. of 2005. That spurred us on to a pretty good season. The same thing may happen here. The guy with the complaint may not realize that Bureau barely played in the first half and had all 11 of his points in the 2nd half. Where would those 11 points have come from had Bureau not played. I don't think we would have gotten nearly that much from anyone else. He hit 3 of 4 threes in that half. By being so hot, it also enable Gradnigo to be open on the game winner as Bureau was used as a decoy. Crow never tasted so good to me as I was for keeping the redshirt. Of course who was to know how well Bureau would play in his first action.

He not only hit three big shots inthe second half, he did a nice job on the boards as well. No way we win this one without him.

    No way.

I always think it is better to red-shirt a player if that is possible. It is better for the kid in most aspects. They get a chance to learn the system & they get a 5th year of school paid for. After all, they are student athletes.

But if this turns out the same as it did in 93, I dont think I could argue not my previous points.

I agree that red-shirting a player is usually in the best interest of a player. Usually, they need that first year just to adjust to being in college (which most find is a LOT different than highschool!) But sometimes the kids actually get depressed that first year if they are not playing. I saw it happen to several student-athletes I worked with. I guess some identify so closely with being an athlete that it's hard on their self-esteem when they are not playing. Each case is just different, and you can only hope the coach makes the best call for the team and the individual.

Either way, a player can still get 5 years of scholarship. Either they get the red-shirt year paid for and then 4 years of eligibility after that, or if they play their first year they can get their first 4 years of eligibility and a 5th year after their eligibility is up all paid for. The NCAA allows that so that those freshmen who do play don't get "screwed" (for lack of a better word).
