SOCCER SIGNS SECOND PROSPECT FROM SOUTH FLORIDA AREA
Ragin’ Cajuns add depth at goalkeeper with latest signee
LAFAYETTE – Liza Preseault, a goalkeeper from Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla, recently signed a scholarship to attend the University of Louisiana, women’s soccer head coach Dave Poggi announced Tuesday.
Preseault, a spring 2002 graduate of SEHS, will report to UL Lafayette on Friday, Aug. 9 for fall drills. She is the Ragin’ Cajuns’ second signee from the south Florida area, joining Sarasota, Fla., native Rachel Rozelle on the 2002 Cajuns’ women’s soccer team.
“Getting another good player from the soccer rich, south Florida area is a major accomplishment for our young program,” said Poggi, who will lead the Cajuns into their third year of existence in the fall.
Preseault will be eligible for the fast-approaching 2002 season, which begins Friday, Aug. 30 at the Baylor University Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas. The Ragin’ Cajuns open the weekend tournament with a 7 p.m. game against BU.
This past season, Preseault was selected to the 2002 Florida All-State Soccer Team and was named the Player of the Year for winter sports by the Bradenton Herald after leading the Seminoles to their first district championship in school history.
A four-year starter for SEHS in net, Preseault recorded 13 shutouts in the 1999-2000 season and finished her career with 35 shutouts and 634 saves. She once scored a hat trick during a district playoff game her junior year.
She is a very talented player with excellent technical skills and possesses a tactical knowledge of the keeper position. A very courageous player who learns quickly from her mistakes, Preseault should make an excellent addition to the UL Lafayette goalkeeping corps.
“I am very excited to have a player of Leslie’s quality join our program,” Poggi said. “She will fill an immediate need that we have in our goalkeeper position.”

LAFAYETTE - Head women's soccer coach Dave Poggi sent his 28 players through their first day of practice Saturday as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns opened preparations for the 2002 season.
The squad worked out for almost three hours Saturday morning and came back with a two-hour session in the evening at Cajun Track, and will continue workouts today from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Cajun football practice fields.
"I'm excited that the season is finally starting," said Poggi, who will lead the Cajuns into their third year of existence. "All of the hard work that the players have done this summer will hopefully pay off."
The squad, aiming for its season opener Aug. 30 against host Baylor in the Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas, will feature only two upperclassmen in senior Sara Vienberg and junior Ashley Delahoussaye - the lone link to Louisiana's 2000 inaugural squad.
"There are a lot of new faces," Poggi added. "Therefore, the challenge for our coaching staff will be to get this group of athletes to play together as a collective unit to achieve team goals."
The roster includes nine returning sophomores, one redshirt freshman, 14 incoming freshman and two transfers. All in all, over half the squad will be newcomers.
Louisiana brings soccer to campus for the first time on Friday, Sept. 13, against Northwestern State at Cajun Field in a 7 p.m. match. In the program's first two years, all home matches were held at Moore Park in Carencro. The rest of the Story
WACO, Texas - History was made Sunday at the Baylor Labor Day Classic as UL Lafayette's women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Texas Christian in the tournament finale for both schools.
The Cajuns (0-1-1) entered the match never having tied a game in the school's brief history. The match went two overtimes with only one shot being fired off during the extra frames.
Lafayette native and St. Thomas More High School product Tiffany Garber scored the equalizer at the 51:27 mark as she directed a shot past TCU goalkeeper Christina Bobb. Sophomore * Brown set up Garber's goal for her first assist of the season. The goal was the first of the season for the Cajuns and the first of Garber's collegiate career.

LAFAYETTE - UL's women's soccer squad will open its 2002 home slate tonight, and in the process usher in a new era of Ragin' Cajun soccer.
Since the program was launched in the fall of 2000, the Cajuns have never played a match on their own campus. All matches during the first two seasons took place at Moore Park in nearby Carencro.
That will change this evening.
UL (1-2-1) and head coach Dave Poggi will host Northwestern State (1-2-1) at 7 p.m. in Cajun Field in the program's first match held on the Louisiana's campus.
"Using Cajun Field will allow us to have night games," Poggi said. "That will help accommodate visiting teams and officials, fans, and my athletes. The city and the Lafayette Youth Soccer Association have been very gracious in accommodating us in the past, but it feels really good to be coming home (on campus).
"It couldn't be a better solution for our program," said Poggi. "We are very excited about having the opportunity to showcase our squad to the community of Lafayette."
Area youth will be admitted into the match free of charge as UL celebrates youth soccer night. Ticket information and information on the youth night is available by calling the women's soccer office at 482-5165.
UL enters the match coming off a 2-1 win Sunday at Oral Roberts, the first of the young season.

LAFAYETTE - All it took was one quick burst of energy.
Louisiana's soccer team was playing its third match in six days, including a two-overtime scoreless affair 40 hours earlier, and it showed in Sunday's home match with Centenary College.
But freshman Tiffany Garber found that much-needed burst, turning a solo run into an early second-half goal that provided all the scoring needed in a 1-0 victory.
"With all these games and a hot day, this was set up for a slower pace," said Ragin' Cajun head coach Dave Poggi. "But Tiffany had a burst of speed and was able to finish. She'd had a couple of chances in our last three or four games and wasn't able to finish, so I'm happy for her."
The Youngsville and St. Thomas More product got her first career game-winner four minutes into the second half when she took a pass from Ainsley Breaux, worked her way past two Ladies defenders and fired a 20-yard rocket from the right side that got past a charging Heather Lindsey in goal.
From there on, it was left to a stifling Cajun defense that limited Centenary (8-4) to only five shots in the match. The Ladies had scored 38 goals in their 11 previous games, but Cajun goalie Liza Preseault recorded her third straight shutout and has now gone 304 minutes without allowing a goal.
"We knew we'd have to play tough defense," Poggi said, "because Centenary can score a lot. I'm really happy with the way we defended.
"Our back line (Sara Vienberg, Kristina Boldt Klausen and Stacey Otzmann) have been out there the whole time in three straight games, and their legs are dead. They couldn't move up a lot with the team, but they hung in there."
Centenary, which had a seven-match win streak snapped in a double-overtime loss to Texas-El Paso Friday, pushed the action through much of the first 15 minutes and missed a golden opportunity when forward and leading scorer Lyndsay Bigler was wide with a breakaway shot past Preseault.
Staff Reports
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Freshman forward Stacy Smith etched her name into the record book and UL Lafayette's Ragin' Cajun women's soccer team got back on the winning track here Sunday with a 3-1 Sun Belt Conference win over Arkansas-Little Rock.
Smith scored two of the Cajuns' three goals and fellow freshman Liza Preseault made two saves in goal as UL Lafayette (4-5-3, 1-1-1) collected its first SBC win of the season. UALR's lone goal of the match came when Natalie Hanks knocked the ball into the Cajuns' goal at 47:29 of the second half.
Smith set Cajun single-season records for goals (8) and points (17). Her second goal of the match at the 34th minute broke the previous mark of seven set by Ashley Delahoussaye in the inaugural 2000 campaign. That goal also gave her 17 points on the season, besting Delahoussaye's 16 in 2000. It marks the third time this season Smith has scored two goals in a match, also a school record.
UL's other score came four minutes after UALR (5-9, 1-5 SBC) cut the lead to 2-1. Sophomore * Brown tallied her first goal of the season from 10 yards out into an empty net. UALR goalie Marsha Stewart came out from the net to challenge Brown but was unsuccessful.
The Cajuns got on the board first with Smith's first goal of the day at 7:20. Junior Sara Vienberg picked up the first of her two assists on the day on that goal. Vienberg also had the helper on Smith's second goal.
The two teams were evenly matched. UL Lafayette outshot the Trojans 8-7 and led the shots on goal tally 4-3.
The win moves the Cajuns into the middle of the pack in the SBC standings and was their first-ever in Little Rock.
UL plays its final two home matches of the season this week. The Cajuns will challenge two of the Sun Belt's premier teams in North Texas Friday at 7 p.m. and Denver Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Cajun Field.

Info provided by coach Poggi on Delphi
My friends, the Track/Soccer project is proceeding as planned. Just a little slower than both Track/Soccer and the University would like. In my mind, cost is the major deterent. I believe the UT facility (which I have seen several times) which hosted the Women's Final Four this past season cost about 15m. The figures I have heard for ours which I believe is currently going out for bid is a fraction of that amount. My only concern,in the 3 meetings I have been present for, has been the playing surface (drainage, crown, demensions). The major discussion at these meetings have concerned the track itself and have centered on the cost of the track (I am sure Coach Veazey could explain the particulars). While I have learned allot about the construction of a quality track facility, my imput has been minimal. The overriding current in these meeting have been how do we get the best facility possible (for everyone)! Hopefully this explanation will suffice. However, like before I would be happy to discuss any concerns which any supporter of UL Athletics might have in a in-person meeting.
In concluding, one of the things that makes working at UL a pleasure, is the spirit of cooperation which allows us to do more with less (not only amongst coaches). I can't think of a program in the UL "Athletic Team" that hasn't assisted in the growth of Women's Soccer. The football and baseball programs have led the way (practice/playing and lockerroom facilities). In the future, the relationship between the track and soccer programs will follow a similar path. Its an exciting time to be involved with UL Athletics!
Coach Poggi
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Lady Cajun soccer head coach Dave Poggi announced Saturday five new additions for his fall 2003 squad.
The list includes four high school standouts and a transfer from Centenary College. One of the signees will return to the area where she starred as a prep soccer standout – Marielle Phillips of St. Thomas More who comes to the Cajuns after spending one season at Centenary.
Poggi’s third signing class also includes Melissa Barger (Triad HS – Troy, Ill.), Meghan Crawford (Gibault Catholic HS – Columbia, Ill.), Lauren Schwindt (McPherson HS – McPherson, Kan.) and Tanya Hopson (Klein Oak-Spring, Texas).
Phillips scored two goals and had one assist in her freshman season for the Ladies of Centenary College while playing in all 19 games. She was a member of the Dean’s List with a 4.0 GPA. At STM she helped lead her team to a 24-4-1 in her senior year and helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back district titles in 2001 and 2002. She will be joined by former STM teammates Tiffany Garber, Ainsley Breaux, Ashley Delahoussaye and Natalie Hanks.
Louisiana rewarded for fewer than 10 yellow cards in 2002 season. ULSILAFAYETTE _ The National Soccer Coaches Association of America handed out its 2002 Team Ethics Awards and the University of Louisiana was a Bronze Award recipient as the lone representative for the Sun Belt Conference.
Sixty teams, from men’s and women’s programs in all divisions, received either the Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the Team Ethics Award, which recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the Laws of the Game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.
In order to be considered for one of the awards a team has to have 10 yellow cards or less and no red cards for the entire season.
Louisiana received just nine cautions in 18 games last season and was not issued a red card.
“As a team we set a goal to win the Sun Belt Conference "Sportsmanship Award", only to find that they didn't have one,” said head coach Dave Poggi. “This recognition (for men's and women's programs/all divisions) is something special and helps keep what we do in perspective.”
Poggi and the Lady Cajun soccer program are gearing up for the fourth season in program history in 2003. The Cajuns are currently working in spring drills.
