  5. UL Soccer 2002 07-31 Ragin’ Cajuns add goalkeeper

SOCCER SIGNS SECOND PROSPECT FROM SOUTH FLORIDA AREA
Ragin’ Cajuns add depth at goalkeeper with latest signee

LAFAYETTE – Liza Preseault, a goalkeeper from Southeast High School in Bradenton, Fla, recently signed a scholarship to attend the University of Louisiana, women’s soccer head coach Dave Poggi announced Tuesday.

Preseault, a spring 2002 graduate of SEHS, will report to UL Lafayette on Friday, Aug. 9 for fall drills. She is the Ragin’ Cajuns’ second signee from the south Florida area, joining Sarasota, Fla., native Rachel Rozelle on the 2002 Cajuns’ women’s soccer team.

“Getting another good player from the soccer rich, south Florida area is a major accomplishment for our young program,” said Poggi, who will lead the Cajuns into their third year of existence in the fall.

Preseault will be eligible for the fast-approaching 2002 season, which begins Friday, Aug. 30 at the Baylor University Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas. The Ragin’ Cajuns open the weekend tournament with a 7 p.m. game against BU.

This past season, Preseault was selected to the 2002 Florida All-State Soccer Team and was named the Player of the Year for winter sports by the Bradenton Herald after leading the Seminoles to their first district championship in school history.

A four-year starter for SEHS in net, Preseault recorded 13 shutouts in the 1999-2000 season and finished her career with 35 shutouts and 634 saves. She once scored a hat trick during a district playoff game her junior year.

She is a very talented player with excellent technical skills and possesses a tactical knowledge of the keeper position. A very courageous player who learns quickly from her mistakes, Preseault should make an excellent addition to the UL Lafayette goalkeeping corps.

“I am very excited to have a player of Leslie’s quality join our program,” Poggi said. “She will fill an immediate need that we have in our goalkeeper position.”

LAFAYETTE - Head women's soccer coach Dave Poggi sent his 28 players through their first day of practice Saturday as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns opened preparations for the 2002 season.

The squad worked out for almost three hours Saturday morning and came back with a two-hour session in the evening at Cajun Track, and will continue workouts today from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Cajun football practice fields.

"I'm excited that the season is finally starting," said Poggi, who will lead the Cajuns into their third year of existence. "All of the hard work that the players have done this summer will hopefully pay off."

The squad, aiming for its season opener Aug. 30 against host Baylor in the Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas, will feature only two upperclassmen in senior Sara Vienberg and junior Ashley Delahoussaye - the lone link to Louisiana's 2000 inaugural squad.

"There are a lot of new faces," Poggi added. "Therefore, the challenge for our coaching staff will be to get this group of athletes to play together as a collective unit to achieve team goals."

The roster includes nine returning sophomores, one redshirt freshman, 14 incoming freshman and two transfers. All in all, over half the squad will be newcomers.

Louisiana brings soccer to campus for the first time on Friday, Sept. 13, against Northwestern State at Cajun Field in a 7 p.m. match. In the program's first two years, all home matches were held at Moore Park in Carencro.

  7. UL Soccer Lady Cajuns soccer team ties with TCU

WACO, Texas - History was made Sunday at the Baylor Labor Day Classic as UL Lafayette's women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Texas Christian in the tournament finale for both schools.

The Cajuns (0-1-1) entered the match never having tied a game in the school's brief history. The match went two overtimes with only one shot being fired off during the extra frames.

Lafayette native and St. Thomas More High School product Tiffany Garber scored the equalizer at the 51:27 mark as she directed a shot past TCU goalkeeper Christina Bobb. Sophomore * Brown set up Garber's goal for her first assist of the season. The goal was the first of the season for the Cajuns and the first of Garber's collegiate career.

  9. UL Soccer Cajun soccer squad makes first Cajun Field appearance (Tonight)

    ADVERTISER

LAFAYETTE - UL's women's soccer squad will open its 2002 home slate tonight, and in the process usher in a new era of Ragin' Cajun soccer.

Since the program was launched in the fall of 2000, the Cajuns have never played a match on their own campus. All matches during the first two seasons took place at Moore Park in nearby Carencro.

    That will change this evening.

UL (1-2-1) and head coach Dave Poggi will host Northwestern State (1-2-1) at 7 p.m. in Cajun Field in the program's first match held on the Louisiana's campus.

"Using Cajun Field will allow us to have night games," Poggi said. "That will help accommodate visiting teams and officials, fans, and my athletes. The city and the Lafayette Youth Soccer Association have been very gracious in accommodating us in the past, but it feels really good to be coming home (on campus).

"It couldn't be a better solution for our program," said Poggi. "We are very excited about having the opportunity to showcase our squad to the community of Lafayette."

Area youth will be admitted into the match free of charge as UL celebrates youth soccer night. Ticket information and information on the youth night is available by calling the women's soccer office at 482-5165.

UL enters the match coming off a 2-1 win Sunday at Oral Roberts, the first of the young season.

  10. UL Soccer Lady Cajun soccer team takes 1-0 victory

LAFAYETTE - All it took was one quick burst of energy.

Louisiana's soccer team was playing its third match in six days, including a two-overtime scoreless affair 40 hours earlier, and it showed in Sunday's home match with Centenary College.

But freshman Tiffany Garber found that much-needed burst, turning a solo run into an early second-half goal that provided all the scoring needed in a 1-0 victory.

"With all these games and a hot day, this was set up for a slower pace," said Ragin' Cajun head coach Dave Poggi. "But Tiffany had a burst of speed and was able to finish. She'd had a couple of chances in our last three or four games and wasn't able to finish, so I'm happy for her."

The Youngsville and St. Thomas More product got her first career game-winner four minutes into the second half when she took a pass from Ainsley Breaux, worked her way past two Ladies defenders and fired a 20-yard rocket from the right side that got past a charging Heather Lindsey in goal.

From there on, it was left to a stifling Cajun defense that limited Centenary (8-4) to only five shots in the match. The Ladies had scored 38 goals in their 11 previous games, but Cajun goalie Liza Preseault recorded her third straight shutout and has now gone 304 minutes without allowing a goal.

"We knew we'd have to play tough defense," Poggi said, "because Centenary can score a lot. I'm really happy with the way we defended.

"Our back line (Sara Vienberg, Kristina Boldt Klausen and Stacey Otzmann) have been out there the whole time in three straight games, and their legs are dead. They couldn't move up a lot with the team, but they hung in there."

Centenary, which had a seven-match win streak snapped in a double-overtime loss to Texas-El Paso Friday, pushed the action through much of the first 15 minutes and missed a golden opportunity when forward and leading scorer Lyndsay Bigler was wide with a breakaway shot past Preseault.
