We were in it because we LOVED it, and because the band didn't have to operate with a 4-year eligibility rule like the sports teams, some of us kept marching beyond a standard college career. If I had to guess, I would bet that because of how the band is now set up with scholarships, etc, ALL of the current PoA members are UL students.
Was the info in this link temporary and/or limited to the last band director? https://forumeus.com/...an-UL-Students

Ha... he was anchoring the pivot point for everyone else. One of my albums from the Contest of Champions has the then USL band playing as a guest at the contest. Ritter is screeching and hanging over on everything played. Some people didn't like it. I did. My idols as a young trumpet player were Bill Chase, Maynard Ferguson and Doc Severinsen. Doc was a hugely under-rated trumpet player. He was highly thought of by older folks, but he was massively better technically than his contemporaries.

My friend, I stand CORRECTED--Did NOT know about the SLCC students!! That wouldn't be a reason not to change the moniker in the future if it's considered.

Doc was the man. I loved him on the Carson Show. Tommy Newsome would substitute when Doc was doing a gig. I liked him too. One night Johny was getting ready yo sing a song and he asked Tommy to give him and "A". Tommy said "AAAAA" with his hand clenched. It was classic. There has never been nor will there ever be another show as good as the Carson show.

Ritter was the iron man of the band I think it was either him or Jimmy Armand that ste the record for the longest time in the band. Maybe you can refresh my memory Jay.

I use to LOVE the band in the '63-'66 years when they played "everything is coming up roses"---Now wasn't that the theme of the guy right before Carson and who was that band??? Also wasn't one of the band guys from Cuba and was in prison and used to practice everyday without the piano just imagining the keys???

Ritter was definitely in for at least 10; not sure about Armand, think he was close; the RECORD would have to be Manny. He started in '74, and stayed until George Sparks took over for Jim in '86 or '87!!

Manny was DM in 1988. Not sure after that
