A date with Ball State is looming on the horizon for NIU. Should be their best chance to get a loss. Fresno will prolly go undefeated. SDSU had them and gave the game away in OT. Those kind of teams that escape a loss like that...usually don't get put in that position again for the rest of the year.
There are only two existing bowl games that are the right bowl games for us. The New Orleans Bowl and the Texas Bowl in Houston, period end of story. A BCS bowl is a pipe dream at this moment.
I think an opportunity like that could come with a special season, but a number of things would have to fall our way. In no way will UL turn down the NO BOWL on a maybe invitation. But what ULGRAD@HOU is saying is true if UL would get such an invitation without an exemption. It would good for the program's resume long term if such an invitation would take place. But that is not going to happen this season.
Maybe not...Big 12 has 6 bowl slots, not including BCS and BCS Title game. I doubt Baylor will continue their unbeaten streak so I do not see the Big 12 occupying both BCS and BCS Title games. So that leaves 7 spots to fill. Right now...their are 5 teams (Baylor, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, & Oklahoma State) that are gonna make bowls. Texas is the only not bowl eligible but at 5-2 they are all but a lock to make one. Under that...you have 3-4 Kansas State, 3-5 TCU & West Virginia, 2-5 Kansas, and 1-6 Iowa State. The chances of Iowa State and Kansas making a run are slim and none. I see Kansas State becoming the 6th bowl eligible team by beating Iowa State, TCU, and Kansas and backing in at 6-6. This would likely eliminate TCU from bowl contention (how the mighty have fallen). That leaves West Virginia as the wild card. They need 3 wins to ruin it all and two losses to do all mid majors a solid. West Virginia plays Texas (loss), TCU (toss up), Iowa State (win), and Kansas (win). So it all comes down to TCU. After doing all this research...does the Texas Bowl have a secondary deal with anyone?
Still doubt the Texas Bowl would be ready to invite the Cajuns BEFORE the New Orleans bowl. That's all that matters I think, the timing of the invite. The NO bowl will be ready as soon as we are.....Even if the Texas Bowl knew for a fact there tie ins would not be there, they would then have to want the Cajuns and invite us....all before NO invites us.
I'd be happy with either bowl, I just don't see anything but the New Orleans bowl, realistically, this year.
What day is the Texas Bowl? I doubt it is on a weekend!
