sorry if this has been covered, but I went to the article in an attempt to see my comments. Jason Bourne put a link a few days ago to the older (first chronological) comments. that link is broken and loops you back to the original article. Later he comments that "Sorry folks, The News Star has removed that article".
gee...how convenient.
It seems odd that you tell us to settle down... and win the SBC title... before "we" brag about anything... considering we've dominated your program... that you earlier bragged had gotten way more recognition last year than we've ever gotten... in the same year we smacked your program... in your house... and went on to our second straight bowl... that we won... again... and are on course to both secure another bowl bid and highly likely take the conference championship.
You're not being a D... but you need to stop understating UL's recent accomplishments, our university's current growth, and our obviously higher trajectory. ULM is flat-lining right now and doesn't really need more enemies in this state. You and others need to realize that Tabby butters her bread sucking up to you guys. The state reps from your area butter their bread sucking up to your locals. But when state business transpires, ULM does not need us to work deliberately to cut you off from your limited sunshine.
If you actually thought about this latest spew from the whiners about our name, you'd see that the only thing that could happen is our university administration "might" have to toss a "Lafayette" in here and there. It will not change the UL fan branding name use. In fact it will embolden us to slam it in your face. I guarantee you that all you've done or will do is to create a much more impassioned UL fan base.
Everytime a fence riding fan shows up you guys shove them off the fence.
Who is stopping them SLU, LTUR, and the rest? It is a mess because politicians insert themselves where they should not. What if SLU decided to market itself as Louisiana Lions, and shorten to Louisiana. It is not a problem except for the participants, and therefore is not a problem, because it is absolutely self limiting.
Now you are seem to be unhappy with UL? Well I graduated at USL as well, but that was then this is now.
The point is that the Authement compromise is the seed of the current issues. Instead of the compromise "preventing problems" in the future, we are now in a "problem solving" situation.
Most anybody, can solve a problem, given enough time, but the really great leaders/managers are problem preventers, with good long range planning skills. (That's why most smart parents give their kids vaccines.)
Second, if other universities follow the UL and ULM lead (although unlikely now), it would make it even more difficult for UL to be the sole "Louisiana." In the athletic polls or conference standings, you could not list Louisiana, Louisiana, Louisiana, etc. without the differentiating "at xxx". Check out the Sun Belt standings and see how our name is listed.
Why would anyone else want to be UL at xxx given the current situation? It would be a circular firing squad of all the universities in the ULS system going at each other.
Glad you graduated from USL. I am both SLI and USL.
And based on where we stand today, I am not sure that the compromise "UL name" has achieved better name recognition in athletics than if we had remained USL - but of course that is debatable, and not really relevant since we will not go back.
I sorta like the old ring of "Southwestern and Ragin Cajuns," from the Faulkinberry era. Although not likely, I am hopeful Dr. Savoie can somehow dig us out of this hole and achieve our original goal - University of Louisiana - period.
Northwestern uses it to an extent. About ten years ago I was in Natchitoches and there were signs something to the effect "University of Louisiana Northwestern State". It will be interesting to see how this plays out. It's not the 80's anymore. I went to the McNeese board and there's not much talk about it. It's mostly the older guys that want to turn the clock back to the 1970's. I lived in Lake Charles and sort of attended McNeese for a year. I never understood the small town mentality there. They are more than happy to pull for LSU and McNeese at the 1-AA level forever.
