Read on Delphi that BOP will have Coach Robe on his show here in a few minutes, during the 4pm hour. Supposed to be talking a lot about the roster and stuff like that.
Tune in!
I won't be able to tune in. Do you mind summarizing what he said?
I was able to take some quick notes (trying to listen, take notes, and do some work), but probably missed some things, so if anyone has anything else, please feel free to add. also some of my notes might be somewhat inaccurate so if I make a mistake, please feel free to correct me.
-Pitching
-Only 1 freshman will get a Red Shirt, not many RS' available because of 5 game weeks and new rules.
-Greg Wilborn will take a RS to have Tommy John surgery
-Farquar will be a starter
-Hunter will be fine, and Solich is really doing great right now.
-Buddy is working hard to come back from injury, and is hiring a Personal Trainer to get better over the Christmas break...he has to work harder than the other guys to stay as good.
-DF, HM, and BS (not sure if in that order) would be our top three IF the season started today. But, season doesn't start today, and that doesn't mean they'll always be the weekend guys because of their tougher mid-week schedule.
-Rotation not certain because of the 5 game weeks they'll have this year.
-Bullpen by comittee becasue of 5 game weeks
-IF we had a full-time closer this year, he would have to be a MAN
-He's really impressed with Bulliard (Fr who threw really well in Fall),
-Cook, Morris, and Waskam (sp?) all freshmen, all threw well in the Fall
-There's a new LHP from a JUCO that will have to get better, didn't catch the name.
-Will have 15 pitchers and will have 20 position players
-Talked about new rules, too many for me to talk about...I think they'll only be able to have 30 scholarships now, can't just offer a kid books and wait on them to get better anymore, he said that new rules might have prevented guys like Dallas Morris, Hunter Moody, Scott Dohmann and a couple other really good players we've had over the years that we might not have been able to get becasue of the new rules
-Infield
-Missed the first part of this because I was on the phone
-Will have lots of options
-Hicks/Derouen will take 3rd base and maybe SS (maybe only 3rd, missed a bit of this one)
-Freshman named Tyler will be at First, will be a great D-1 level hitter from the start
-Catching
-Lucroy gone
-5 or 6 catchers on roster
-Thad Griffen will be real good
-Won't have a full time catcher because of the way the season will play out with all the games in a shorter period of time
-Enough catchers so he didn't ahve to over-catch someone in teh fall
-Mike Petito will head to a JUCO for the spring
-B Lafleur is back, brings experience and leadership, tony got him to take Griffen under his wing
-Guillory is back, RS last year
-Chance Harst will get some time too.
-Talked about one of them pitching in '09, might have been talking about Griffen, also talked about him playing in the field some, but probably not in '08
-Outfield
-Gisclair, logan, and Hatfield back...need to work on shrinking the outfield
-They'll have good/great arms in OF
-Logan made best adjustment of all returners, He and Fotenot had best Fall's
-Whipple back, might play first base too, really good OF, but might be a better 1B
-Brian Bowman available, started slow in Fall, had to get used to hitting the change-up, will be fine
-Greg Becknell (sp?) getting better from Jet Ski accident...sad story b/c he had a potentially promising career in the majors...came to school part-time for a year to save a year of eligibility, Full-time in year two and took a RS, now will be in third year of school (and with team? not sure if he was able to interact with team in the part time year) but will be a RS Freshman...He's helping team mentally as an inspriation from coming back from a bad accident and never giving up and working hard...got him a standing O at a Fall game after he hit a homer or made a play or something...tony said that if there's ever a time when the bases are loaded in the bottom of the ninth, and they needed a game winning hit, he'd put Becknell in because he trusts him as a hitter and knows he can do it, the only problem is getting him off the bases, i guess he's still slowed from the injuries
-And we also have Chance Harst to play OF
-Other Comments
-Jay asked him to compare this team and last years team, tony said "We're better than last year." He said he had no idea the freshmen would be so good, and that he was worried that we might not score too many runs, but he thinks this team might have more power!
-Talked about Dustin Miller...he's leaving the team to concentrate on nursing clinicals, too hard to do with baseball, somebody tried it a couple years ago and had a tough time balancing...Miller tried it out in the Fall but felt that he couldn't devote enough to both to excel in either one...Robe talked really highly of him, said he was a really good student.
-Will have more offdays built in becasue they have to and they won't want to burn them out
-guy named Chatman had surgery, status in unknown
-TJ Gros will be on Red Shirt becasue of surgery
-Conference will be really good...Tourney champs UNO will have everyone back, and their weekend guys might be there weeknight guys this year
-then he said something that I didn't catch the end of; He said, "There's only one thing that could hurt this program at the end of this season is..." I missed it so if anyone knows what he said, please add.
That's all i got.
Is Andre Robichaux going to make the team????
I know he is the coaches nephew and started his college career with SLU, but wondering what is his status.
I just hope that if drafted a Cajun does not land up on the triple A team that consistently beat the team in Jefferson. Cause I will pull for the former Ragin'Cajun over any pro team in any sport.
Seriously I think he was talking about the draft taking some of the kids we signed for the 08-09 season school year. How good could that be if they show up?
This really gets me pumped...I saw 4 of the Fall WS games... The freshman seemed to be really good.. not just pretty good... Certainly Griffin... I thought Whipple was a true freshman. no? And the kid from Lafayette High... then we start talking about the pros dipping into our 2007 class? Wow... The teaching and experience they get under Robe is pretty darned valuable and when you add to that fact of getting your education I think it would take a lot of $$$'s to lure them away
