Thread: Is ULM a Rival?

  1. Default Re: Is ULM a Rival?

once you have voted (while logged in) you can't vote again. Just look at your page when you sign in again, it doesn't give you the option to vote again. Regardless of who you think should be our rival, I think ULM is one right now. I also think MTSU is a friendly rival, we want bragging rights but we still have a good rapport with them. I don't see us with any friendly thoughts for ULM, we have just had a bad record with them recently. Perhaps over time they will not be our rival, but currently they seem to be. The hatred for ULM being considered a rival are the seeds that sow a good rivalry.

That really underlies ALOT of the frustrations we feel, doesn't it. Both athletically and academically, and even the marketing of the university. Many times we have no greater rival than ourselves (or our administration)

Point well taken. I realize that the point of forums are to express opinions and elaborate on the topic at hand. However, people are just responding to the way that the post was constructed: Simple Yes Or No. Not "Yes, but...." Or "No, because..."

I didn't have an option to choose "Yes, since there is nobody else", so I chose "Yes". And I imagine that is how other people viewed it.

I firmly believe that ULM is "A" rival. They might not be "THE" rival, but they are an in-state school in the same system as us and are on pretty much the same level as us athletically, whether we like it or not. So until we get to a higher level or they drop off significantly, the games will continue to be competitive and each team (and their fans) will strongly wish to beat them. And hate to lose to them.

IN MY OPINION, that is a rivalry. And no, LSU is not a rival.

    I agree.

If the poll had asked; Is ULM a RIVAL? I would have said NO!

It asked; Is ULM a Rival? I said yes.

I look at the generic sense of the word. Are they a competitor? Yes, and that is all.

The things you point to would seem to normally be ideal for a rivalry. However, it is not one that was allowed to develop on its own. The scheduling is done by the conference office and they have tried to manufacture this as a rivalry through the schedulingof it as the last game each year. It has not had a great deal of fan appeal on our part mainly for reasons off the football field, IMO.

    Good point.

If I had my way we wouldn't play them at all. I don't even like the way they became a college, riding the McNeese legal coattails as it were.

You know, I started this poll just to see if attitudes have changed since ULM has become a full member of the SBC and really not knowing what to expect.

I started it because, in my humble opinion, a rival is one you hate to lose to and enjoy beating and by that modest definition, ULM qualifies. I didn't ask whether they should or should not, that's a discussion for another day.

But I did not expect to find the level of truth that can be summarized in that one statment of yours.

    Good one.

We are our greatest rival in a sense. As for adding verbage on to a poll thread... I haven't seen one yet that didn't have people elaborating on their answer. I also do not think you control whether anything is "a discussion for another day". But, maybe you should poll that as well.

If ULM develops into a rivalry, and I did suggest that they probably will, I think it will be a shame for us. That is my opinion for this day and likely for everyday hence forth.

There was a day in time we wanted more than what we are getting. I can see we are settling into the role we were commanded to serve.

Given this logic, Tuffguy, would McNeese St. be considered a UL rival if we were in the Sun Belt conference?

I cant talk for alot of the alumni, but for students, most of us werent alive and around for the rivalry years ago and the most frustrating thing about the loss was a perceived seperation (The 1A vs 1AA thing). Yall turned out in the end to be much better than we thought (what are yall now, like 11-0?). With that said, if there were to be a move up to 1A and play in the sunbelt, yall would DEFINITLY be a rival of ours. Its almost impossible to not be, look at MT vs WKU, while they didnt have a rivalry in football for years because WKU was in 1AA, as soon as they start the transition, the rivalry starts to rekindle. Proximity, plus playing yearly, plus an alumni base who already knows the established history would make it hard not to start up. Right now, the cajuns only have 1 team, in the conference that we play every year that fits the criteria that I stated, but I think if yall moved up yall would fit the criteria as well. Good luck in this playoffs, I know yall will definitly do some damage there.

I don't deny a rival fits into this description, but I hope we feel that way about every team we play. If this sums up the concept of a "rival", I think I'll talk to Bustle about making everyone, everywhere our rival. Maybe that will take care of everything.

A good way to test a statement is to see if the contrapositive is NOT true. Is a non-rival a team that we would not care if we beat and not hate to lose to?

I think I must be in the minority on this topic (the poll proves it). No big deal. Let's just win the game on Saturday... I think we are playing ULM, so instead of getting the usual leg room around my seats, I guess we'll be packed in like sardines. Either way, I can't wait.

I hope everyone has a great turkey day tomorrow.

I will keep my answer simple, it might be because I'm younger than some so I feel it more...

    I HATE ULM!

This makes us rivals to me...
