Thread: Pic of the "new" St Mary street

Default Pic of the "new" St Mary street

I had not seen a picture here of what the re-designed St. Mary would like look like, so found this on the UL site, and thought I'd share. Anyway, looks pretty cool, but I still think that they should just close St Mary, from McKinley to Johnston, during school hours. That way they could use M. Doucet and the "new" student union as bus-stops.

That's a good idea; closing during school hours. I always thought it should be more isolated for the campus.

That's pretty much what it looks like now except for the planters in the road. I wonder how many lawyers are salivating over the potential cases they can get with all of those planters in the road. If they want to do that then they need to make St. Mary a true Boulevard with one wide lane and a bike path in each direction.

Agreed, but I assume that the cost for this would be prohibitive.

Am I wrong in thinking that the only place St. Mary is two lanes between Pinhook and Congress is between McKinley and Johnson?

Starting at Johnston street St Mary is 4 lanes until McKinley. Then is converts to two lanes with turning lanes at Taft/Girard Park, and all of the traffic light intersections. From Johnston street to Congress it is two lanes with turning lanes at major connection points.

If you look closely you will see that it is a boulevard. There is a raised concrete structure with the planters on top......at least that is what I see......

The deal is that it will just be 2 one lanes for traffic in the opposite direction------ the Library side is for bikes only going each way!!! This is going to be bike U and students will pick up their bikes even when commuting at Cajun field---and as they legalize grass it will look a lot like Amsterdam!!!!! Not sure about the prostitution part but maybe could get the 4 corner area ladies moved up University!!! lol

Here is an updated photo of the expected completed design, taken from the UL site, dated 11/4. Notice that it is different from the earlier ones, in that both auto lanes are in the middle, with the cyclist lanes occupying the outside lanes. My guess (hope?) is that this is an easy/cheap, quick fix, with the boulevard-type design to come later????

I like the FDLs painted on the street.

At least have a curb separating the bike lanes from the auto lanes. You don't want any cars swerving into a bike lane! With all the idiots looking at the smart phones while driving, I wouldn't want to be on a bike sharing a road with automobiles!
