WWOOOOOOAAAAAA---Manny was a good guy and not the ___ that spilled everything, even fabricated crap to the NCAA---He (names escapes me) was resentful to the max for not getting a position and in fact let go!!!!

The name you are searching for is that of former assistant Harry Garverick. For the last four decades, he's usually been characterized as the villain in the story, which is probably only partially correct. What happened back then is far beyond any single person's responsibility.
Manny was a player (not the athletic kind) and good friends with Beryl and Tom. He steered a few dudes the Cajuns way, no question.

Here is a link to Shipley's alleged scapegoat or villian:

    An interesting article.

I ran across this article a while back and was kind of puzzled at how people can shape a reality after 40 some odd years.
I still am uncertain how he could have recruited Winkler since he wasn't even on the staff when wink came in?? Also the ditty about no was odd since no one really recruited no, they took him as the consolation prize after they lost ed Ratliff and nick Connors, all 3 from the same high school team, bo was beyond under the radar having less than 5 offers total so for harry to make those claims speaks volumes.

Well, it's not an article, it's a blog. Big difference. No accountability and if you read the other stuff on the site, appears to be either a high school or college journalism assignment, a How-To-Write-A-Story sort of thing. Garverick's memory may have sounded good to him at the time and bothersome facts didn't always intrude on reality. The author apparently hadn't advanced to the fact-checking stage of the course yet. The misspellings of the athletes' names is sort of a clue. It should be taken for what it is: A very biased version of personal history.

Andrew Toney was the best BB player we ever had here....hands down. Just watched a clip where he dropped 46 on the Showtime Lakers. Check it out.

I hope Elfrid has a long career. He will only get better and better. I wish Andrew had a longer career, he would have been a HOFer.

i saw today that ep is listed as 8th overall in a mock draft, that's insanely awesome, it'll be a shocker if he goes that high though.

    FYI total thread hijack coming.

wow, this thread was a blast from the past, haven't heard from mr rodrigue in a while. Manny psased away last year btw from diabetes if anyone is interested. i called about 20 manny goldstiens in the new york burrows but never got any of them to call me back even if they were the right voice mails and if i got the right one on the phone he never admitted he was THAT manny goldstien. this has happened a few other times, if you remember the name larry highbaugh, the football recruit, i know it's him im talking to on four or five occasions and each time he tells me i have the wrong larry.

I did get coach garverick on the phone three times and each time he told me to talk to his attorney and then hung up without telling me who said attorney was. I toss out a line to these people every once and a while to see if the feelings have changed and i will continue to do so.

as for a general update, im very happy that this project was not done in my original time frame b/c it would have sucked and missed the mark of what actually happened in a major way. Do we have new information? i think so but im not 100% sure of what's out there b/c its been covered by so many but only in fragments imo. What we have is a collection of what i think is all the information side by side which places everything in a completely different context.

the inside story of the hall of fame voters is pretty insightful and to me really places his journey to the hall of fame in a different light, which i don't think has been covered out in the open to date. Its not really one of exile but one of neglect imo, and if we would have just ____ out the thing in 12-15 months we wouldn't have that closure that it now has and kinda landed with a thud like so many things have before with this topic, did i anticpate 36+ months...no? but in a way im glad we are being thorough to a fault almost.

The original estimation was largely in part of me being naive that this topic was already vetted and out in the open when in fact that couldn't be farther from the truth. Throughout the course of the project we have run into numerous factoids both large and small that were just incorrect and if we just ran with them we would look incredibly dumb and lazy. Case in point-"usl was the first Louisiana team to play in an integrated contest at the naia kansas city tournament. "

In fact usl was not the first but the last to play in the integrated naia tournament in 1965, since ULMost has never made it...chumps. But we were the first GSC team to play after the 1957 ruling that act 579-barring integrated athletics, was declared unconstitutional. BUT both hbcu's did it numerous times from 59-64 without any political push back on record. Why is this fact stated incorrectly, why it didn't matter for the other white schools to do it pre 1957 and why it was evidently ok for the hbcu's to do it post 1957 isnt clear on the surface but extremely important to wrap your head around since the original claim is this event started the snow ball effect that lasted his entire life. This is just one of dozens of "wait...what?" moments in the murky journey to the hall of fame that needs to be sorted out before you can understand the legacy and also have critics take you seriously. One of the claims i hear over and over is "i know that things in that book are false so there fore all of it is false." This one claim has been an enormous hindrance to coach and i have learned from it and refuse to fall into that trap myself.

In the end everyone is going to laugh a bit, get angry a lot-at politicians, the ncaa, the fossil and even coach himself at times-but have a better understanding of what happened and what kind of a person it takes to transform the social landscape when everyone is against it. Also everyone will need a good cry and a nap, this thing is emotionally draining in both good and horrible ways.

and yes we have a release date, it is the day after we watch it and say its good im kidding of course but i know now that i cant nail a date even to a matter of months until many many things that are out of my control are resolved, and yes they are legal matters so no i cant talk about them. but to our donors we are still moving along even though it seems we have a glacier in tow at times, so keep the faith baby im still all in.

update complete, time to try and cut something new that will run on nola.com tomorrow morning-d
