Strange comparison. Bo and Andrew were guards. Elvin was a 6'9" (I believe) center/power forward. How can you compare?


With that said, I will say again...Toney was the best basketball player ever to play here. PERIOD.

I did a lengthy interview with Ivory 7-10 years ago when he was working as a television producer in Hollywood (still have the transcript, I think) and he was upfront about his motivations and what he considered USL's agenda. He had (and probably still has) what we would describe as militant views and butted heads with Shipley often. He left early to take an offer in the pros and I remember asking Shipley on another occasion to name the best player he ever had.

Elvin was an awesome talent. He played one season in Earl K. Long because of renovations to Blackham. Obviously, more people wanted to cram into there than the place could accommodate.

Yet I was told just this past year on a trip with Tom Cox that the BEST player they ever had was Larry Fogle-----Remember when he left UL that the next year I think that he led the nation in scoring at Canisius (SP) !!! You could tell that Freshman year that we had signed another great one!!!!

I've read a few comments posted on various websites by a former UL alum who has questioned the role a "Manny Goldstein" played in recruiting athletes to UL. I thought is was an interesting question, particularly after I googled the his name.

Has your research for the documentary uncovered any information about Goldstein, or was he of little consequence and not relevant to your movie?

Does any one of the board remember him from that era?

Douglas, I knew I said I wouldn't bother you anymore about this. But I am having a difficult time trying to understand how we are able to, some degree, put Coach Shipley on a pedestal. Are you telling me that just because he blazed a trail in desegragation and defied the good ole boys of the south, that justifies the shame he helped to bring on this university. Before anyone accuses me of sour grapes, you must know that I had a terrific vantage point to watch what was going on. I was a student broadcaster and I went to every home game for the two years leading up to the Death Penalty. I even took bus rides with them to shools in Louisiana for away games. And I went on that unforgettable 5 day trip to Vegas to play UNLV. Did you ask Coach Shipley about Manny Goldstein, what his position was @ then USL, and who was responsible for his hire? I would love to know what his response was. Manny Goldstein was the same guy fired some 6 years later along with Norm Ellenberger for alleged tampering with grades at The University of New Mexico. To all of you out there thinking the Ragin Cajuns were railroaded, Spare Me because you don't know what you are talking about. Who in their right mind thinks we could assemble the kind of talent we had without the hint of suspicious activity? Do you think those guys just came here because of our excellent recruiting ability? If you do then you are living in Fantasy Land…Why would anybody want to be reminded of The Death Penalty? It was a dark time for our school and dredging it up some 40 years later and trying to put a positive spin on it because of Coach Shipley's ability to cross racial lines is not going to help erase the stain…. Boy ---I really liked Manny---didn't know him hardly but I guess he was from NY city---the talk and the swagger, etc.-----He had a rather slight to normal build with a protruding stomach---One day he has on a bright red, white, and blue horizontal striped knit shirt----I was walking with Coach Banna and Manny comes by---Stops to talk (he is always talking) and Coach Banna (Always the driest humor) tells Manny that it looks like he swallowed a basketball-----Coach then pauses and says that in fact an ABA ball-----I am about to pee on myself and Manny just laughs and goes on his way!!!!! Last time I saw Manny I was with Tom Cox in NY city and Manny was driving a limo and came to the hotel to visit---Still smiling and laughing and TALKING with that NY city accent!!!

I am interested in Rodrigue's question that you copied/pasted, and an answer from the reseachers & movie makers if they have a perspective.

I was around back then, and it was a black eye for the university. Maybe some new information has surfaced in their research or possibly they interviewed Goldstein.

What do you have to offer on this subject?
