Bobby Paschal was indeed the coach that year. That was also the year that Rainey beat UAB at the buzzer to win and the CJ Carl Jordon went up the Lane against Texas, and in a bit of irony, if I am not mistaken it was Kevin McHale and the Minnesota Golphers that turned the clock to midnight. How ironic that for AT went on and be the thorn in the side of Mr Mchale's Celtics for so many years.

That could probably go both ways since Paschal was Hatfields assistant the first year back from death penalty and until Hatfield left for greener pastures

  3. UL Basketball Andrew Toney on list of Careers Cut Short

Philadelphia guard Andrew Toney earned his reputation as the "Boston Strangler'' for his many games as a Celtics nemesis in the team's Eastern Conference battles of the 1980s. Opponents like Larry Bird and Pat Riley simultaneously winced and raved over Toney's shooting stroke, quick first step and crunch-time heroics.

The No. 8 pick in 1980, out of Southwestern Louisiana, averaged 17.5 points as the 76ers' matchup nightmare through his first five NBA seasons. But stress fractures in both feet virtually wiped out his 1985-86 season and Toney played a total of 87 games over his final three seasons before retiring after 1987-88. Readers Adam of Los Angeles and Robert Johnson of Minneapolis bemoaned Toney's omission from the first list.

  4. UL Basketball Andrew Toney the Reluctant Star

MILWAUKEE - This was after a practice at Saint Joseph's University sometime in the mid-1980s. Reporters covering the 76ers wanted to speak with Andrew Toney, the star guard who was battling foot problems. But when they entered the cramped locker room in the Fieldhouse, Toney was nowhere to be found.

This, in and of itself, was not unusual. There were days when various players, for a variety of reasons, didn't want to deal with the media. But this was different. There was a cassette player on the top shelf of Toney's stall. There was a note attached, instructing anyone interested to simply hit the "play" button. Toney, at best a reluctant interviewee, had asked - and answered - what he believed to be all the pertinent questions.

Julius Erving, the legendary Doctor J, was across the room, watching in rapt fascination.

Toney has remained reluctant to be a public figure. He has rarely done interviews or made appearances, even when they involved the Sixers' 1982-83 championship team. Even after agreeing to be a major participant in tonight's 25th anniversary ceremony honoring that team - he was the star shooting guard, in a backcourt with current head coach Maurice Cheeks - he changed his mind. By all accounts uncomfortable with celebrity, he told the Sixers he wasn't coming.

"He once said, 'That was then, this is now,' " says former Sixers and Comcast-Spectacor executive Dave Coskey, who has remained in touch with Toney over the years. "Not speaking for Andrew, but I know he follows the Sixers games; he's just at a different time in his life. He's comfortable being Andrew Toney the father and golfer, not Andrew Toney the basketball player."

  5. UL Basketball Athletic Network Spotlight on Ragin' Cajun Andrew Toney UL Basketball 1976-1980

Of all the accomplishments by Andrew Toney, both with Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun basketball program from 1976-80 and later as an NBA champion with the Philadelphia 76ers, perhaps it was a game he missed that speaks most clearly about his character.

A friend of mine told me that he saw Barkley on the golf channel and Barkley met up with Toney. When he walked up to him he said that he would like to introduce everyone to the best player he's ever played with.....Andrew Toney.

Somebody help with the pic in the article. Andrew, Dion Rainey, CJ and Steve Who???

Billy, when I read your posts, I feel as though I am watching an episode of LOST. Intriguing, but confusing.

Here's something I found about Andrew Toney that I thought noteworthy:

Former Sixers coach Billy Cunningham once spoke about his willingness in an interview. "We're playing the Lakers, the game is in overtime, and we're down a point. We have the ball with close to 20 seconds left, so I call a timeout. The play was for Maurice to hold the ball and, at a certain point, Andrew would come off a screen for a shot. Now, I know Andrew heard me, but as the play starts, Andrew runs over to Maurice, says give me the ball and takes it from him. I'm livid. Here we've designed a play, and he just takes the ball. So, the clock is running down, and Andrew finally drives to the right of the lane. I'm not exaggerating, but three Lakers come flying at him to block the ball. Andrew lofts a 12-footer over them, banks it off the board, game over. His argument? 'Coach, I hear what you're saying but just give me the ball.' That was Andrew."

    Gotta love that!

    And this:

Former Celtic player and current head of Celtic basketball operations, Danny Ainge once said in a NBATV interview "I tell you, Andrew was giving you nightmares when you thought about playing against him. He was already the Boston Strangler, so by the time I got there, I had heard all the stories about Andrew Toney. I was given all kinds of advice on how to defend him - be physical with him, just hang on to him, fight him and hold him. I learned through my own experience that was the exact opposite way to defend Andrew. I thought it was better to just let him run wherever he wanted and try to let him get bored, because every time he was challenged either mentally or physically, he seemed to respond."
