Thread: 2007 SHOWCASE of Marching Bands

  1. ooh LA La. 2007 SHOWCASE of Marching Bands

    DATE November 3, 2007
EVENT: 2007 Showcase of Marching Bands at UL
Location: University of Louisiana - Cajun Field

High school bands from across the state will march and show their stuff at the Annual Showcase of Marching Bands. Proceeds from the day-long event benefit participating bands and the Lafayette Music/Raymond Goodrich Foundation Scholarship at UL.

Prep bands will perform throughout the day, followed by the University Of Louisiana Pride Of Acadiana Marching Band.

Local schools scheduled to participate include Acadiana, Comeaux, Erath, Lafayette High, North side and St. Thomas More.

The top 10 bands selected by judges will receive awards. Individual honors will also be issued to the top drum majors, drum lines and color guards in each classification.

Last year Raymond Goodrich, owner of Lafayette Music and founder of the scholarship fund, said an average of eight scholarships to music education and band students at UL are awarded each year.

I had a chance to talk to Lisa Sagrera whose daughter Alaine is a member of the Erath Bobcat Band.

The Erath bobacat Band is one of the bands competing in the UL Showcase and according to Lisa the band has some remarkable students and band members raging from grades 7 through 12.

Erath has been on the competition circuit since September and will final out this weekend with a whirlwind Saturday that includes two performances. According to Lisa they will have a "1pm performance in Sulphur and at 4pm we will perform at Cajun field. All of our competitions have brought us superiors this year."

The Bobcat Band is very excited about performing at the 2007 SHOWCASE of Marching bands and based on their earlier performances Lisa says they have "gotten an invite to play with a total of 2000 other band students for the Sugar Bowl 08 in New Orleans for New Year’s Day."

I don't think the Sugar Bowl is on NYD anymore but at least THIS Saturday you can check out a band that will be performing during the National Championship game.

Below is a video performance from last Saturday, and the EHS bobcat Band school picture.

I ALWAYS enjoy seeing Erath perform. The first time I saw them perform was my 4th year at NSU and they were making their first appearance at the NSU contest. They did a cool show that was the music of the past century. It was VERY well done and certainly left a impression on me.

I think one of their directors is a former music major that I was in school with. Either way, good luck to Erath this weekend.

I am told the EHS Directors are Kenny Broussard and Mike Vizier.

That's right. I went to school with Mike but I also know Kenny(McNeese grad). Mr. Broussard is a really nice guy.

I know after Neil Simon left Broussard and Vizier had some big expectations to fill and they seem to be picking up where Simon left off.

    Turbine,

Has Mark told you that he's being inducted into our athletic Hall of Fame Friday evening?

By far the most successful coach of our kids. He's got more district championships than everyone else on staff combined. And the only one to ever win a state championship at EHS. The shame is that he's not even on staff.

We all know that Lafayette High has the best band in the state; should be alot of fun.

  10. ooh LA La. Showcase features student musicians

Hundreds of high school football players took the field Friday night in the final week of the regular season. Pages of their achievements line sports sections across the state, along with highlights broadcast on TV and radio.

Hundreds of other students played on those same fields. But these band students won't be in the paper or TV.

That's the motivation behind the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands today at Cajun Field.

"This showcases the great talent we have in Louisiana with these students," said Jamie Cappel, showcase director. "Everything is about sports. These kids work just as much as our athletes do and don't get half the recognition.
