There’s an old saying in football which says “Offence sells tickets but defence wins championships.”

As true as that statement is, you won’t find anything here about defence except for how defences have been victimized time and time again by one of the best playmakers in the history of the Canadian Football League.

Edmonton Eskimos slotback Fred Stamps will play his 100th career game in the CFL when he and the rest of the Green and Gold host the Toronto Argonauts from Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday night.

The 31-year-old’s first taste of the CFL was back in 2007.

He attended a free-agent workout hosted by the Eskimos prior to training camp. The little known fact is Stamps was being wooed by the Calgary Stampeders as well, which leads to the running joke about him.

Shouldn’t someone named Stamps play for the Stampeders?

Well of course not. Eskimos fans are happy to have called Stamps one of their own for the last seven seasons.

The native of New Orleans would make his CFL debut on July 28, 2007 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, a game that saw him catch his first CFL pass.

99 games later and Stamps is a part of Eskimos history. He recently surpassed the 7,000 receiving yards mark and sits fourth on the Eskimos list, just ahead of former teammate Jason Tucker and behind Tom Scott, Terry Vaughn, and Brian Kelly.

Stamps surpassed the 7,000 yard mark in his 97th career game which is staggering when you compare his numbers to Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Geroy Simon.

Now Simon is the CFL’s all-time leader in receiving yards but his all-time yardage total in his 97th game was 6,585 yards.

That’s 415 yards behind Stamps in the same number of games played. Imagine if Stamps managed to stay a little healthier during his seven-year career? Stamps has missed 21 man games due to injury in his career

He has been named both a Western Division All-Star and a CFL All-Star four times.

His first 1,000 yard season came in 2009, when he recorded 1,402 yards which is still a career-high for him. He’ll likely record his fifth straight 1,000-yard season on Saturday vs. the Argonauts.

That would put Stamps just one behind Vaughn for the record for most consecutive 1,000 yard seasons with six.

Last season might have been the toughest one yet for Stamps, and yet, his most remarkable. With only 110 receiving yards in the first four games of the season, Stamps would record an incredible 1,300 yards in final 14 games of the season to finish second in the CFL in receiving yards just behind Toronto’s Chad Owens.

The demeanor of Stamps never changes off the field. He remains quiet and unassuming and is always quick to shift any sort of attention away from him to the rest of the team.

Stamps also realizes that he’s not that impressionable 24-year old anymore. When in his rookie season he relied on the leadership of Ricky Ray, Jason Tucker, A.J. Gass, and Sean Fleming. He’s now the established veteran.

“It’s definitely come full circle,” he said.

“From what I know when I came into the Eskimo way, I just go by that way because those guys won Grey Cups after Grey Cups. I feel like if that’s the path they’ve taken to get to a championship and that’s the path I try to lead by.”

Stamps is not a “rah-rah” type of leader, he’s the lead by example type. Stamps lets his play do the talking.

After a year of instability at the quarterback position following the Ray trade, Stamps is now catching passes on a regular basis from new starter Mike Reilly.

Reilly says a big reason why he signed with the Eskimos in the off-season was for the chance to play with one of the best playmakers in the CFL.

“When you’re looking at teams you want to go somewhere where you are going to set yourself up for success,” Reilly said.

“When you look at the wide receiver crew here in general, definitely was one of the better ones in the league and I knew there was going to be guys that were going to be making plays. But Fred headlines those guys, no question about it.”

Stamps has also shown his toughness. After suffering an unfortunate abdominal injury in 2011, he still managed to produce a 1,000 yard campaign – playing through considerable pain in the process.

He’s battled other injuries as well. This year he’s been limited in practice due to a nagging lower body injury which has already caused him to miss one game. Still, he continues to manage to find a way to perform at a high level.

One thing has eluded Stamps so far in his CFL career, a Grey Cup ring. It’s obvious that he would like one.

“You know a lot of guys don’t understand when you come to this league, this is a big time league,” Stamps said. “It’s not about the money because you can’t retire off a CFL salary. When you leave this league you want to leave with a championship. That’s something that I want, I want a championship badly. I’m just going to be patient and just wait until it comes and whatever it takes and whatever the team needs me to do, I’m going to do it to my best.”

An Eskimo tried and true, congratulations to Fred Stamps.
