LOUISIANA - The Lady Cajuns of UL tennis had five players advance to the semifinals round of their respective brackets in Day 1 of the Pepsi Challenge tennis tournament on Friday.
Julie Mazinova, Angela Dangond, Myrthe Molenveld and Kim van der Horst each advanced in the red draw singles. Maria Ruiz de Gauna advanced in the white draw.
Mazinova defeated Northwestern State’s Kathrine Lange 6-1, 6-2 to advance. Dangond bested Louisiana-Monroe’s Noelia Lion 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to advance. Mazinova and Dangond will play each other in the semifinals round on Saturday.
Molenveld advanced after defeating McNeese State’s Meri Gol 6-2, 6-1. Van der Horst topped Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Carmen Abeaboreu 6-2, 6-2. Molenveld and van der Horst will face each other in the semifinals on Saturday.
Ruiz de Gauna advanced to the semifinals after besting Fairfield’s Michaela Cerrone 6-0, 6-2. She will take on McNeese State’s Giovanna Arrando on Saturday.
In doubles action, Mazinova and Molenveld advanced to the quarterfinals round after defeating Fairfield’s Cerrone and Gretchen Amberg 8-1 in the red doubles draw. Van der Horst and Dangond also advanced.
In the white doubles draw, Ruiz de Gauna and Mia Gordon advanced to the quarterfinals after they topped Louisiana Tech’s Ashley Wedderburn and Alexandra Gaspar 8-3.
Tournament play continues Saturday with doubles beginning at 9:00 a.m.
