Candidates 6 years ago? (2001)

Hey guys I am sure someone one here knows...I have been trying to find out who the other candidates were when we hired Bustle but in every article I find they do not mention anything about the others. Can someone please tell me who the candidates were other than Bustle 6 years ago?

Baldwin wasn't UL's first choice to replace Stokley three years ago. He wasn't even second or third. By the time Dave Cully, Rich Rodriguez and Chris Scelfo had taken themselves out of the running, the Cajuns were deep into the 1999 recruiting campaign and time was running out in Martin Hall. The LSU assistant coach and Troy State head coach Larry Blakeney were the last candidates standing and Authement chose Baldwin.

Now, three years later, he has another choice to make.

You are correct.

When the time finally came to name a new head football coach in December 1998, Nelson Schexnayder was forced to make a choice.

There were 10 or 11 candidates for the job, said Schexnayder, the athletic director at Louisiana-Lafayette.

One of them was Jerry Baldwin.

Another was Mike Leach.

Our great leader, in his vastly superior wisdom, basically said NO to:

Rich Rodriguez
Mike Leach
Larry Blakeney(twice)
etc. etc.

No matter what excuses you may hear as to why, each one of these men wanted to coach here, and we turned THEM down.

Now, we may have had to do some things that certain people wouldn't like, but they could have been given what they wanted.

Instead, we voluntarily kill the program, which has lead us to dealing with the aftermath of that decision 10 years later.

This is what you call a "LEGACY"

Dude this job is always going to be viewed as a stepping stone, or a tombstone. I sure hope we get a lot of great coaches who use us as stepping stones and move on after a few great years here.

Agreed... But there is nothing wrong with providing that platform and being the beneficiary of that platform... Maybe after a couple of "steppers" our program will have become established enough to be seen as a permanent gig for a coach...

I think this next time (hopefully Bustle proves me wrong and the next time is a long time from now) we go out and find a young, agressive coach wanting to make a name for himself and is not going to hide behind excuses... Give us 5 years... Take this program to 9 or 10 wins... a couple of bowl games... then move on up... Then we do it again... works for me
