Thread: First BCS Poll is out

  1. UL Football First BCS Poll is out

Ohio State. South Florida. Boston College.

No, they’re not three of the four top seeds in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The truth is even more bizarre than that.

They’re the top three teams in the first 2007 BCS standings. And two of the three could finish out unbeaten and meet in the BCS championship game on January 8 in New Orleans.

    The rest of the story

POLL EXPLANATION & ABOUT THE BCS:
To derive a team’s poll percentages in the Harris Interactive and USA Today polls, each team’s point total is divided by a maximum 2850 possible points in the Harris Interactive Poll and 1500 possible points in the USA Today Poll. Teams are assigned an inverse point total (25 for No. 1, 24 for No. 2, etc.) for each of their respective computer poll rankings to determine the overall computer component. The highest and lowest ranking for each team is dropped, and the sum total of the remaining four rankings is divided by 100 (the maximum possible points). This figure produces a Computer Rankings Percentage.

The six computer ranking providers are Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe.

Each computer ranking accounts for schedule strength within its formula. The BCS Average is calculated by averaging the percent totals of the Harris Interactive and USA Today Polls, and Computer rankings. The highest BCS Average receives the No. 1 ranking, the second highest receives No. 2, and so forth.

As much as I hate to say it, LSU is in excellent position. At least one of those teams will lose, and if LSU holds serve from here on out (which is very possible) and meet/beat Florida in the SEC Championship game, they should have enough to move back up ahead of one of the smaller, possibly undefeated teams.

You are correct. I was thinking that they would drop down to #7 or so. They are in very good condition to be back in the BCS Championship running.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, but they don't have it as easy as some others. Ohio State doesn't have a conference title game to play in, although they do go to Happy Valley and to Michigan, which is always a crap shoot even though OSU has dominated that game. I think that because USF is USF and we don't know much about them and they don't have a history for being choke artists, I think we can say they have 5 very winnable games left, with no conference championship game. However, when they're all trying to get at you and be the heros with nothing to lose, you never know. And, as for BC...Their toughest game left is at VaTech. the others should be winnable, but they'll also have the extra conf. Championship game.

That being said...LSU has a tough wildcard in Auburn at home, and Arkansas at home, and Alabama and Ole Miss on the road (plus LTU at home). While some of those games might not scare anyone, they're just like the games for the teams above, they're games where they lesser team will be trying to be hero's and knock off the big one and spoil their chances. Plus, most, if not all, have some sort of rivalry aspect to them. And, most importantly, I think that FL and UK did a great job in offering a Blueprint on how to beat LSU. I'm not too crazy about their offense, pressure them and plug the run and they'll kill themselves. but what had been their best asset, their D, got pretty exposed the other night and gave up a lot of points and a lot of plays. Then, State'll have the SEC championship game to go through where they'll play either UK or SC again. One beat 'em, one played 'em tight.

Now, that being said...I think LSU can easily win out, but their tough road is only matched by The OSU's tough road, assuming they don't leap over anyone.
