Looked like the d backs started playing up on the receivers in the 2nd half and the offense finally looked in sync. I expect a different team from this point on but I also expect there will be 2 conference games where we get beat like we did tonight. Final result... Another 8-4 season and a bowl game. I'll take it
Tale of two halves. The first 6 quarters of this season have been very frustrating to say the least. It still upsets me that we don't have that true defining victory in the regular season over a bigger opponent. I think that is something that will hurt Hud's chances of getting that big time job offer in the very near future. We have some huge issues to address immediately if we want to match the success of the past two years, especially on defense.
On offense, I've stated this so many times but we tend to start slowly every year. I don't know what the similarities are between Hud and Bustle in that regard but we've just never really started off the year playing well. This is even more frustrating when you hear how well the offense was playing in camp before the season started. I do think that a portion of that cause is coaching and possibly not wanting to show your cards too much before conference which just drives me nuts. Our offense was buzzing last year towards the end of the year when all teams have had a chance to scout us and see what we are doing. Funny how not many could stop us. We need to just be willing to run our offense and put our guys in the best position to be successful.
On defense, he have a lot of work to do. I was worried going into this year on defense due to our alarming stats we gave up last year having some really good corners and more experience. I think some of our issues are lack of experience but I still think a lot of our issues stem from coaching and playcalling. The huge cushions we have been giving receivers on the line is not the players doing this on their own. They are being instructed to do this and Chris Simms was right about his criticism of it. Maybe someone who has coached football can explain to me why you have 10 yard cushions on receivers when its 3rd and 5? I try to think of a logical reason as to why this occurs but just can't. At that point, it doesn't matter how good your pass rush is since you aren't going to give them the opportunity to get to the QB. I'm not surprised we have only one sack so far this season and it was a J. Anderson Middle blitz since we aren't giving ourselves opportunities. I also don't put all of that on Willis. Hud's philosophy in the pass defense has been to keep everything in front of us. We did this with Stewart and we are doing it now.
I still think we will win 7-8 games and likely be in a bowl but I just don't think we are putting ourselves in the best position to win. People have a right to be frustrated and upset, especially after having watched the first 6 quarters we've played. I was near the point of turning the game off myself last night, especially after the kickoff return to start the second half. I did like the heart I saw in the second half and it certainly appears that Broadway found some rhythm and confidence there so I hope that kind of kickstarts him moving forward. Receivers need to stop dropping the ball and we need to be willing to run Broadway as this offense is truly successful when there is the threat of the QB running it.
I still don't think we will be able to win conference however, as we are just too spotty on defense to hold some of the offenses we will be facing down. As bad as these first two games have looked, we looked absolutely horrible last year at OSU as well and we got things together after that. At some point, we will need to start getting some signature wins against teams like K-State and Arkansas but we will now have to worry about winning conference and getting to a bowl.
Darn right HUD has earned your trust. So much so that you don't have season tickets. You should be features on "Come on Man" with NFL Countdown: "Big time supporter who has faith in his team and coach but missed first half because his computer froze while on Tickermasters website trying to purchase tickets. COME ON MAN!!!!"
It's pretty simple. I live two hours away with a family. It's much cheaper and cost effective to buy tickets as needed. Never had a reason to do it any other way until this year. If we have another great season I will be getting season tickets next year. I'm a RCAF member and alumni. My daughter is currently in grad school teaching a course at UL. I never said I was a big time $upporter. I don't have the means. I'm not the only regular supporter on here that got the ticketmaster surprise. In a way I'm rather happy to have to pony up for season tickets. It's a much easier pitch to the wife.
I'm a huge Saints fan since I can remember but I haven't been to a game since 2000. Spending $500 for the family to have 3 hours of entertainment just doesn't add up.
I understand and not busting your chops about being a big monetary supporter, not everyone has the means to do so (including me). It just gets very old when the same old complaints are had about more butts in seats, nicer stadium, etc.... and we can't get some of the biggest complainers to buy season tickets. There are way too many people on this board playing the chicken and egg game which is why I rarely come on here any more. They'll spend 2 weeks arguing whether the chicken or the egg came first.
Whether you like it or not the administration is making a move to do something, in this case it's phase 1 of the master plan. All of us may have different ideas of what should have been done but that's the same thinking that got nothing done over the few decades. And if someone strongly opposes it enough they should submit their resume to be considered for the AD's position. I'm not content with the progress we have made over the last couple of years but the majority of people need to realize we were the worst team in the country, or one of them, for years. Things don't happen overnight and we need people contributing routinely if things are to keep movin positively.
Game is now on ESPN
I think I saw me on the replay----So many happenings that you forget the little bad things like the dropped KO return---then the 4th down fake punt dropped pass---the 3rd down and long situation where they got first downs---Why we kicked the ball to the right instead of trying to extend the TBs Stover had going (think he had the wind)!!!!
I'm at work and Ragin Pagin is blocked so this is on a phone thus I'll be brief. I agree with eveything you have said. Things are moving in a positive direction at UL. Thank God for HUD! That's why I couldn't believe the negativity with the 0-2 start against the big boys. Disappointing yes end of the season no way. I guess in a way that in and of itself shows growth. Ten years ago we would be excited and speaking of moral victories.
