Thread: The Ragin' Cajun name should not apply to all

  1. Default The Ragin' Cajun name should not apply to all

Donald Bujol requested feedback on his question, which appears every few years: "Does Ragin' Cajun really represent our great range of peoples and cultures at the university and inhabiting Acadiana?"

My answer is, "No, and it should not." On the other hand, it does indeed represent the melted population that derived from the Spanish land grant people, the French, and the Nova Scotian exiles, i. e. the Cajuns. These were the populace primarily in charge when the university was started, I would think. Yes, it does leave out the Creoles, Africans, Asians, Middle East, Jewish, etc. but would the bulldog do any better in identifying everyone?

This is so COOL Re: The Ragin' Cajun name should not apply to all

And there are how many true Irish playing for Notre Dame. (come to think of it, Notre Dame isn't even in Ireland)...and how many Indians playing for Florida State.... let's get past the identity crisis. Acadiana is a hot bed of cultures with lots of wonderful foods, music styles, dialects and people...this is a strength of our community and our university...but I don't think anyone should argue over our mascot...it is clever, unique, and representative of a huge part of Acadiana and the university. I'd rather be a Ragin' Cajun than a Fightin' Irishman any day....it seems that their record isn't so stellar this year either.
