The highest-ranked champion from the so-called "Group of Five" conferences - the Sun Belt, to which UL belongs; the newly named American; Conference USA; the Mid-American; and the Mountain West - is guaranteed a spot in one of the six bowls each year through the 2025 season.

Ranking methodology hasn't been defined yet, but Benson wants Sun Belt schools to schedule so its champ is positioned to be highest-rated and realize whatever lucrative financial windfall it can for itself and the conference.

Benson said the new system will provide "a significant increase in revenues to the Sun Belt, our peer conferences and our member institutions."

Already the Sun Belt knows it will be guaranteed at least $14 million in 2014, up at least $11.5 million from the BCS system.
