Is Onna Charles hurt ? If not any reason why she's not playing ? Just wondering. You don't luck up and score over 1,000 points do you ? If memory serves me didn't she score 35 at Troy and 25 against Texas at Texas. Wow. Thanks for the info and job you do.

Onna has played in 20 of the 21 games but is only averaging 19.1 minutes and 7.1 points per game.

Last year she averaged 11.5 points per game in 29.6 minutes so for some reason (with all the departures) I thought she would be the "go to" gal this season.

Her production per minute played is roughly the same as last year so she is not playing worse on the scoring end. Who knows???

  3. UL Basketball Re: 2007-08 Lady Cajuns Basketball

With the UL women's basketball team enduring tough times, freshman Jasmine Barnes still found a way to speak with the clarity and wisdom of a veteran.

"We have to stick together through everything," Barnes said of UL, which has lost seven straight and 11 of its last 12 games. "When we have some downs and sickness on the team we have to keep our heads up and pray about it.

"We have to stick together. That's the most important thing."

  5. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns senior guard flying well below the radar

Sometimes lost in the midst of a team's struggles are the individual accomplishments of a persistent leader.

For example, take UL senior Alicia McDaniel. While the Cajun women's basketball team has lost eight straight Sun Belt Conference contests and 12 of its last 13 coming into today's game at Denver (8-14 overall, 3-8 SBC), McDaniel is set to make program history.

Granted she plays for UL (5-17, 1-10), McDaniel will become the program's all-time leader with 115 games played. Former Cajun guard Shaunda Bedel-Johnson played 114 games at UL from 1986-91.

"It will be an honor," McDaniel said, "but at the same time I want to get some victories under my belt. That's more on my mind right now."

  6. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns Fall Short vs Denver (nothing to be embarrassed about)

Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns put forth a terrific effort, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Cajuns were on the wrong side of a 60-52 decision at Denver on Sunday afternoon.

Two three-point baskets by Brooke Meyer broke a tie game and gave the Pioneers a four-point lead with less than three minutes remaining in the contest.

UL (5-18, 1-11) couldn’t get the shots to fall in the closing minutes and DU (9-14, 4-8) made six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

After leading for nearly the entire first half, the Cajuns relinquished their lead exactly five minutes into the second stanza.

With the game tied at 31-31, DU grabbed an eight-point edge thanks to a 10-2 scoring burst. Nnenna Akotaobi completed a three-point play to start the host’s rally. Sara Benham then scored seven straight for the Pioneers to give DU a 41-33 lead with 9:26 left.

From there, the Cajuns scratched their way back. UL countered with a 10-2 run of their own to tie the game with five minutes remaining. Alicia McDaniel started the scoring with a free throw and was followed by baskets from Bronson Rodgers, Onna Charles and Courtney Ratliff. Whitney Dunlap buried a triple after good ball movement to knot the game at 46-46.

McDaniel led the Cajuns with 14 points, five assists and two steals. Ratliff finished with 12 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Sonora Edwards led all players with 10 rebounds.

Meyer led four Pioneers in double figures with 13 points.

Offense was slow to come by early.

The Cajuns led 2-0 until a basket by Benham tied the game at the 13:37 mark.

Ratliff put the Cajuns back in front, 4-2, at the 11:58 mark.

DU took their first lead, 8-7, midway through the first half, but the Cajuns immediately rallied with a 9-2 burst to take their biggest lead, 16-10, with 6:49 remaining in the half. Jasmine Barnes, McDaniel and Ratliff each scored before Dunlap drilled a three-pointer to account for the Cajuns scoring.

A basket by McDaniel with 3.3 seconds left in the opening half gave the Cajuns a four-point cushion at the break.

The Cajuns return home to host Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday at Earl K. Long Gym at 7pm.

  7. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns Head Coach Errol Rogers believes his team is getting better

Another frustrating road trip left first-year UL coach Errol Rogers looking for answers.

After a 75-60 loss at Florida International on Feb. 6, the Ragin' Cajuns lost at Denver, 60-52, on Sunday.

Rogers, though, said he took some positives away from the loss, which was the ninth straight for UL. The Cajuns led, 23-19, at halftime and finished with only 12 turnovers.

"I thought it was one of our better games of the year," said Rogers, whose Cajuns (5-18 overall, 1-11 Sun Belt Conference) have lost 13 of their last 14. "We just didn't respond when we had a chance.

"I liked our effort and the way the kids played."

From NCAA Tourney to moral victories - all in one year with one bad hire.

This is getting to be quite hilarious. The game against Denver is one that you could actually lay blame on the players and not coaching. We shot 2 for 12 on FREE THROWS, and Denver shot 10 for 15 on FREE THROWS. When you lose by 8 points that's a very significant stat. The turnovers may be better, but when each team has 12 turnovers, it's a wash. At least Coach Rogers is trying to build the Team up now and stay positive. I hope he can start admitting that we are having some challenges at the Coaching positions now, and not relying on a feel good statement from the Middle Tennesse Coach, talking about our bad breaks.

    Geaux Cajuns !!!

Does anyone know what happened to Ona Charles? She is a senior. She topped the 1,000 point top 10 for the school. I haven't heard anything about her in the newspapers for a very long time.

Errol Rogers should have never been selected as head coach. Who did this? David Walker? Shame! Shame!

  11. UL Basketball Lady Cajuns Battle to OT, Fall Short vs. ULM

UL's Lady Cajuns put forth another terrific effort, but for the second time in four days, came up just a little short, falling in overtime to ULM by a final score of 65-59.

UL (5-19, 1-12) overcame an eight-point deficit with less than six minutes to play, but ran out of gas in the extra session.

In overtime, the teams traded possessions before Shannon Lloyd scored the first basket for ULM (16-8, 9-4) in over six minutes. Lloyd connected again to give the visitors a four-point edge.

Onna Charles’ jumper was answered by Lloyd at 1:47 to keep the Warhawks leading by four.

The Cajuns couldn’t get a shot to fall the rest of the way.

Whitney Dunlap led the Cajuns with 13 points. Sonora Edwards enjoyed her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Alicia McDaniel also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points.

The Cajuns, trailing 57-49, held the Warhawks scoreless over the final 5:29 of regulation to force overtime.

UL trailed by just four at the last media timeout, which came at the 3:05 mark.

A steal and lay-up by Charles cut the Cajuns deficit to 57-55 with 2:09 remaining.

A terrific in-bounds play left Edwards wide-open in the lane for an easy basket to tie the game with 39.1 seconds remaining.

The Cajuns had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but a shot as time expired was short.

The Warhawks were led by 14 points apiece from Lloyd and Lottie Moore. Moore also registered a double-double with a team-high 11 boards.

ULM held a five-point lead just 36 seconds into the second half, but the Cajuns used a triple from Edwards and a jumper by McDaniel to tie the game.

A triple from Dunlap, her third of the game, gave the Cajuns their first lead, 38-35, at 15:59.

From there, the Cajuns would only make one basket from the floor in over a seven-minute span to fall into a 49-42 hole.

UL found their touch again, using baskets by Bronson Rodgers and Courtney Ratliff around two from the stripe by Jasmine Barnes to cap a 6-0 spurt.

The Warhawks sprung back with a 6-0 jaunt to reclaim their seven-point lead, 55-48, with 6:30 to play.

The Cajuns got a spark off the bench from Valanette Amie, who hit two free throws and then a lay-up on back-to-back possessions to chip the ULM lead to 57-53 at the 4:35 mark.

The first half was a game of runs.

The Warhawks opened the game with a 10-2 run as the Cajuns started 1-for-10 from the floor.

UL cut their deficit to five points, 12-7, but ULM countered with an 8-3 run to build a 20-10 edge midway through the first half.

The Cajuns responded with 16-8 jolt to close within two points. Five different Cajuns scored consecutively, Charles, Edwards, Barnes, Dunlap and Lyndra Bell, before Dunlap nailed two long three-point baskets to trim the ULM lead to 28-26 with 1:47 to play in the first half.

UL will head back out on the road, traveling to Jonesboro, Ark., for a Sunday afternoon tilt with Arkansas State.

Another moral victory as we go to overtime. But, that is 10 real losses in a row.
