If you don't want it to be a one-hit wonder, let's work to make sure it isn't. Some of my employees are UL students... one of them commented to me recently that you guys look at the student activism of the 70's, and compared to students of those days, you feel as if you had no power.

Let me be blunt: You are the most powerful generation of young adults in the history of the world.

Look at WikiPedia. We worked with them a couple of years ago, brought the acting CEO and the Grantwriter in to Lafayette for a couple of days of meetings. At the time, they were the #19 website in the world.

They had 2.5 people working in their office. (Even more impressive: since then, they have gone through 3 or 4 CEOs, they have constant internal, managerial and organizational problems... and after all those problems? Now they are the #9 website in the world.)

Look at Napster, Youtube, Myspace/Facebook, Blogger, Photobucket, del.icio.us, flash mobs, Linux & OpenSource, etc, etc, etc. Using freely available software and new technologies-- eMail, ListServes, message boards, social networking, social bookmarking, blogs, eZines, podcasts, live audio/video streaming, IM, RSS, cell phones, cell phone cameras, cell phone video cameras-- you guys have created trillions of dollars in profit for individuals and corporations.

Alexander, Caesar, the Bourbon Kings, the Czars of Russia-- none of them had the power at their fingertips that you have at this very instant.

So just imagine what you could do if you guys decided to create other mass movements: social, political, economic, educational, and yes, athletic?

And if it is possible to create such movements, do you know of any reason that UL students couldn't become leaders and innovators in the field?

Props should go to the cheerleaders for turning to the student section and showing them how to jump up and down...They actually led the cheer and we, the student section, listened. That was a fun game.

Actually the guy behind me brought that up. Not saying your wrong and maybe he did get it from the cheerleaders, who knows. But it did get pretty loud in there when we did it. And if u look at the pictures of the game,there is an overhead shot of the student section and theres maybe 30-35 people standing. Im sure it wasnt just us yelling but i think its impressive that that few people can do that.

PS It is said that you can't fight city hall. That's simply untrue. It is actually quite easy to fight city hall, if you know the steps to take.

It's the media you can't fight. They control the message, so they are unbeatable...

...unless you are also media. Then you can take them on.

And you guys are. And because you are, the whole concept of medium/media has changed.

Previously, when we said "media" we actually meant both the medium, and the content. But look at all those Internet/telecommunications movements I noted above.

More and more, the corporations control only the medium itself... the content is yours.

And you don't need the corporations any more. There are free media that you can use, instead of the corporate platforms. Delphi is a corporate medium, completely filled with volunteers' content. This website, on the other hand, is a non-corporate platform, that was created when Delphi was in trouble, so that we wouldn't lose the community. The software is proprietary, but there are OpenSource platforms that Turbine could use, if it were worth his time to port all the content over, and then put up with everyone getting used to a new layout.

Anyway my point is, today the media is only the media... it's less and less the content.

YOU are the content. More and more, the most powerful websites are the ones that are user-generated. And most of those users are teenagers/young adults.

That's how much power you guys have.

PPS And while I'm on this, there is one reason that UL Students could become world leaders in the field.

100 mb/sec.

The LUS FTTH initiative will create the fastest community intranet in the world. Peer-to-peer transmission rates will be at 100 mb/sec.

Let me put that in perspective for those of you who don't do a lot of technology. My organization buys big, commercial pipes for our 3 websites..

...and all we get is 4 mb/sec. And that bandwidth will handle our growth for quite a while to come.

So what can be done with 100 mb/sec??? No one knows.

But if you guys decide to start a UL OpenMedia Activists group, then use the LUS intranet to build upon, and then use the two of them to recruit students to UL...

...the University would rapidly grow in enrollment; the new students would be the supersmart kids, the techies and socially-motivated individuals; UL would become leaders in this new field; and no one would even approach us for some years to come.

Because we tied for the western division lead...Little Rock gets the 2 seed because they hold the tiebreaker, and the 3 and 4 seed will come from the west.

Uhhh what? Seriously? The student section took it upon themselves to do what it did last night. The cheerleaders did what they do best... they were reactionary. Not to downplay their contributions but these guys and gals need to get together for next game and season. This school should have one of the best atmospheres in the country, and last night we got a small glimpse of the possibilities. The days of coming out on to the court and clapping for the fight song and then ending with a lift need to end. The crowd will respond if engaged and all last night took was a relatively few guys and gals in the student section deciding to stand for the whole game and give all they had.
