Can Reed play the slot. I definitely think Carter can. But, no know nothing re: Reed's ability to be a receiver.

No, Reed is not going to play the slot. The problem for McGuire is the same for most freshmen RB's he has problems picking up the blitz and protecting the QB. Its going to be a tough decision for Hud to make because he is talented, but with Carter coming back do you waste a year giving him the ball a few times a game? His other problem has been holding on to the ball during contact. Its a great problem to have, but UL is four deep with Carter coming back.
I think he gets redshirted if the other 4 stay healthy all year and produce to hud's satisfaction.
If he is the first or second best, play him. If not, don't waste it.
Boomer, Carter was tried at the slot position early on but had problems catching the ball in stride. And of course some guy named Peoples just didn't drop many footballs. He was moved back to RB to give them a change of pace back and he has gotten stronger and a little bigger. His burst has returned. He will get similar packages and play special teams if he remains healthy.
He won the job last season before his injury, I'm not ready to give up on him as a runningback. Carter is going to break some big runs this season for us.
I sure hope McGuire is getting the ball at least 10 times a game by seasons end. Why? You may ask.... Name one player we've had here (barring QBs) that wa amazing and didn't play as a true frosh.
I see what you are saying, but I don't think you can compare to years past. UL has more depth and talent than ever before, so my thought is, unless McGuire is without a doubt the best back we have, then we should redshirt him and enjoy the extra year and let him learn this year.
Now, I say that, but I have always believed that RB is a position that a guy can come in and play the quickest. To me, RB is more natural talent, quickness, vision, toughness, than any other position. If McGuire is super-talented, and he can handle the offense, then the team needs him and there is nothing like having that break-away threat on an offense. So, with all that mumbo jumbo, I'm good with whatever Hud decides.
