The National Science Foundation has announced an award of $374,000 to the University of Louisiana for a chemical engineering project.
The project, which will study the processing-structure-property relationship in the fabrication of specialized materials, will be under the direction of Dr. Devesh Misra, professor of chemical engineering.
A UL spokesman said the project is aimed at developing a generic manufacturing process that can be used to fabricate a wide range of high-performance and ultra-light products.
The university says the process involves innovative use of carbon-based nano-sized materials that are 10,000 times smaller than the human hair.
