1951: McNeese Fans Stole UL's Mascot

Mascot Dognapped Gee, Southwestern's bulldog mascot, was the victim of a clever dognapping caper in 1951 before a football game with archrival McNeese.
Dean of Men Glynn Abel had heard a rumor that some McNeese students were planning to abscond with the SLI pooch. So, Gee was moved to an isolated section of SLI's farm for safekeeping.
According to a Vermilion account, written by Associate Editor Roy Hebert, a group of well dressed young men showed up at Foster Hall a couple days before the matchup between the Bulldogs and Cowboys. One pretended to be an alumnus and asked about Gee, since the canine wasn’t at his usual home near the Student Union. He was told Gee was at the farm.
The student went there and knocked on the door of a residence used for home economics classes. "Oh you must be the boys who are going to take care of Gee. He's right over there by the poultry section," said the young woman who greeted them.
The Southwestern student body president soon received a telegram from Lake Charles: "Had a fine trip. Having a wonderful time. See you Saturday. Gee."
McNeese returned Gee unharmed before the game, which the Southwestern Bulldogs won, 35-14.
