As we head into the peak of hurricane season and the start of a new school year.

Contractors are working to complete a levee project in Vermilion Parish. The levee is to protect two schools, no strangers to flooding.

Forked Island E Broussard Elementary is used to cleaning up after storms. The campus flooded after Hurricanes Rita and Ike.

"The second time it came in, we had to figure out how to protect our school," said Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau. He says building a levee was the best and cheapest option for the district.

"We wanted to make sure we could protect the facility so even in an emergency, students could go back as quickly as possible," said Puyau.
