2007 Fall Ball World Series decided 4 games to 2

LAFAYETTE –Brent Solich (Lake Wood Ranch, Fla.) scattered three hits in 4 2/3 innings, while Nolan Gisclair (Marrero, La.) and Thad Griffen (Lake Charles, La.) each homered to lead the Black team to a solid 8-5 win in game one of the Red-Black Fall World Series Friday night. Solich (1-0) struck out six batters, while walking two en route to the victory. Gregory Harmon (Crowley, La.) was touched for all five Red runs in relief, allowing seven hits in two innings. Senior Hunter Moody (Clinton, La.) suffered the loss for the Red team, giving up five runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. In addition to Gisclair and Griffen, Josh Logan (Magee, Miss.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) went 3-for-4 at the plate. After two scoreless innings, Black opened the scoring frenzy in the top of the third inning. Goulas led off the inning with a single to right-center field, followed by a Michael Petitto (Amite, La.) single through the right side. After a Brian Bowman (Lafayette, La.) sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position, Logan drove them in with a two-RBI single up the middle, giving Black a 2-0 lead. In the ensuing inning, Gisclair sent Matt Broussard’s (Breaux Bridge, La.) first pitch of the frame over the centerfield fence, extending Black’s lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Justin Robichaux (Crowley, La.) added another run with an RBI single for a four-run advantage. Goulas later tacked on an RBI single for a 5-0 Black lead. Black would eventually run its lead to 7-0 after a two-RBI triple by Bowman in the sixth inning. Red finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Grant Derouen (Lake Charles, La.) RBI double. Black added another run, regaining a seven-run lead, 8-1, in the top half of the seventh inning. However, the Red squad wasn’t finished scoring just yet. With two on and two out, Kolin Hatfield (Cypress, Texas) drove in a run with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8-2. Travis Whipple (Morgan City, La.) then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right-center field to pull Red to within three runs, 8-5. However, the rally was ended after Derouen flied out to end the game. The 13th Annual Red-Black Fall World Series will continue Saturday with game two beginning at 1 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Great to see some baseball at The Tigue. I took my wife and two girls last night. Perfect night for baseball. What an atmosphere. There must have been at least 500 people there. I bet there aren't many programs in the country that get that kind of support for an intrasquad scrimmage. Great job Coach Robe on building something special.

I only stayed for the first 4 innings, but was impressed with what I saw. The kid from LSU-E has a great curve ball and a decent fasball, should do very well for us this year. Moody looked good in the first 2 and then got roughed up, but I would expect that since he is not in game shape yet. Harmon had really good velocity. Gisclair looked like he was in mid season form. Griffen is a beast behind the plate. Very nice arm. Solich was lights out. We have a lot of very young and talented players. We had some nice double plays also. Should be a great season and we should be loaded for years to come.

I was very impressed with the crowd also. It was almost a mid week atmosphere. I have a cousin who when watch his cousin play last night at McNeese. He said they only had about 50 people. I just wanted to add that comparison.

I expected to see the hitters ahead of the pitchers this early in the season. The pitchers did a pretty good job overall. Solich did a phonominal job. I really hope to see him in the weekend starting rotation. I think Farquar would be more affective coming out of the bullpen.

We have some good young bats. They will make it hard for Coach Rob and staff to make there decisions. Whipple's HR was one of the hardest balls hit all night. Coming from the left side of the plate, that was a Phillip Hawke type of HR.

How far along is Gabe Begnaud injury wise? I was hoping to see him make some contributions to the team this year. He had a noticable limp when he was running. I just dont know how much that was from the knee brace.

I went to the scrimmage last night and this is what I gathered.

Defense look solid as there was 1 or 2 double plays, the centerfielder went back on a couple long flys and made plays, Greg Fontenot has terrific hands and reminds me of Jamenson Parker, and Thad Griffen has a cannon behind the plate.

The Hitters looked ahead of the pitchers but that is expected when you play intrasquad. 3 HR's, couple of doubles, and 13 runs.

Hunter Moody looked real good the first 2 innings before getting hit in the 3rd and 4th.

Chance Harst can hit and will play or DH

Matt Broussard look ok but I expected better from what I heard

Grant Derouen looked a little heavy for 2nd basemen but he looks to be a good gap hitter and should hit alot of doubles.

Scott Hawkins should have a monster year. He played 1st last night and I expect he will play 1st or DH. His arm still does not look strong.

Travis Whipple had a monster HR from the left side.

Matt Hicks played 3rd and we can expect a solid year.

Josh Logan played 2nd last night? I expect him to play CF.

Nolan Gisclair will be a leader. He had a HR to center. Looks strong.

Brent Solich looks to pick up where he left off last year. 4 2/3 scoreless.

Justin Robichaux had a couple hits, one off the left/center wall.

Greg Harmon hot hit but he is bringing the heat.

Brian Bowman may redshirt and may be a project but this kid has some serious potential. Great looking frame, speed, and hit a triple to right center. Built like an Eric Davis.

Thad Griffen look awful his first 3 at bats. He was swinging a terrible pitches and was not even close to touching the ball. But in last at bat the pitcher made a mistake and I was reminded why the majors offered him a 1/2 million to sign. He hit a HR that was a no doubter. He may struggle at times because he has holes in his swing but he has the tools. He is 6-2 and 200 lbs. and he is not done growing. He has strong hands, good bat speed, and a canon for an arm. He not not a pure hitter like Lucroy but may have more tools.

I think Thad's awful at bats is just a case of needing to learn how to hit college pitching. In his 1st AB Moody made him look like a true freshman. The strikeout pitch was a floating change and Griffen was way way ahead of the pitch. I think he will come around.

There is no doubt he has the tools behind the plate though. I dont know who was calling the pitches but he did catch 4-2/3 scoreless inning from Solich.

Logan is actually an infielder that played CF for the Cajuns last year. He will play infield for fall ball right now. Bowman might be your CF if he plays well, but you might see Gislcair, Harst and Hatfield to begin the season. The young kids will have an opportunity to make the final roster this year because we will play five games every week.

Not much offense but solid pitching

Randall Bulliard a redshirt frosh. pitched very well

Buddy Glass although a little wild a times pitched good

Will Long has not shown much. Needs to step up D and O.

Chance Harst hit a HR and is earning a spot in the starting line up

Travis Whipple hit his 2nd HR in as many games

Gabe Begnaud has a lot potential and shows a good bat, but runs with a severe limp. He did leg out a double.

Josh Logan did play 2nd again. To me he is better fit in the OF

I still like Brian Bowman potential

Thad Griffin got another hit.

Behind a stellar pitching performance by redshirt freshman Randall Buillard of Westminster Christian, the Red team rebounded from Friday night's loss to defeat the Black squad 6-1 in game two of UL's Red-Black Fall World Series Saturday afternoon. Red's victory evens the best-of-seven series at 1-1. Bulliard (1-0), who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning until it was broken up, allowed one run on two hits while striking out six batters in 5 1/3 innings. Senior John Zorich surrendered just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Senior Buddy Glass took the loss for the Black team, a day after senior starter Hunter Moody suffered the loss for the Red squad. Glass (0-1) was touched for three runs on two hits, while striking out six batters in 4 2/3 innings of work. Relievers Blake Haagen and Ethan Hebert combined to allow the other three Red runs. True freshman Blake Wascom pitched a very good game and got the win

Brian Bowman got another hit to the opposite field. This guy has serious talent

Leif Dubois is true freshman who is a lefty and pitched well in relief

Luke Wagley a JC transfer came in a struck out the only batter he faced for the save

Greg Fontenot made another good play at short. Great hands

Matt Hicks hit a double off the wall

Kolin Hatfield hit a double late in the game to make it close

Travis Whipple got another solid hit

Scott Hawkins hit a triple

Will Long got a nice hit from the left side, but still struggles defensively

Blaine Lafeur earns his captain tag. He hustles every play. He threw out Josh Logan at third trying to steal. He is struggling with the bat

Chance Harst hit another HR and played 3rd today.

Danny Farquhar pitched 1 inning in relief. Looks even stronger than before. He did give up one run. He cut his hair, almost did not recognize him

There was more offense today but we are mainly pitching freshman. We have at least 4 errors but overall I am impressed with the vets and frosh.

Does anyone else think that Greg Fontenot have a chance to win the starting postion at SS? Greg has showed a very good glove at SS & a strong arm.

Long has a better bat and can hit from both sides of the plate but if he does not improve his glove we may see Fontenot, at least as a defensive replacement. We have seen Robe go with glove over bat before i.e. Devon Bourque last 2 years.
