LAFAYETTE –Brent Solich (Lake Wood Ranch, Fla.) scattered three hits in 4 2/3 innings, while Nolan Gisclair (Marrero, La.) and Thad Griffen (Lake Charles, La.) each homered to lead theBlackteam to a solid 8-5 win in game one of the Red-Black Fall World Series Friday night.
Solich (1-0) struck out six batters, while walking two en route to the victory. Gregory Harmon (Crowley, La.) was touched for all five Red runs in relief, allowing seven hits in two innings.
Senior Hunter Moody (Clinton, La.) suffered the loss for the Red team, giving up five runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
In addition to Gisclair and Griffen, Josh Logan (Magee, Miss.) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) went 3-for-4 at the plate.
After two scoreless innings,Blackopened the scoring frenzy in the top of the third inning. Goulas led off the inning with a single to right-center field, followed by a Michael Petitto (Amite, La.) single through the right side.
After a Brian Bowman (Lafayette, La.) sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position, Logan drove them in with a two-RBI single up the middle, givingBlacka 2-0 lead.
In the ensuing inning, Gisclair sent Matt Broussard’s (Breaux Bridge, La.) first pitch of the frame over the centerfield fence, extending Black’s lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Justin Robichaux (Crowley, La.) added another run with an RBI single for a four-run advantage. Goulas later tacked on an RBI single for a 5-0Blacklead.
Black would eventually run its lead to 7-0 after a two-RBI triple by Bowman in the sixth inning. Red finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Grant Derouen (Lake Charles, La.) RBI double.
Black added another run, regaining a seven-run lead, 8-1, in the top half of the seventh inning. However, the Red squad wasn’t finished scoring just yet. With two on and two out, Kolin Hatfield (Cypress, Texas) drove in a run with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
Travis Whipple (Morgan City, La.) then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right-center field to pull Red to within three runs, 8-5. However, the rally was ended after Derouen flied out to end the game.
The 13th Annual Red-Black Fall World Series will continue Saturday with game two beginning at 1 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
