Long hasn't shown he can hit period. He played with an injured hand last year, but his bat has been less then impressive during the games. Fontenot was hitting around .400 for the fall. I don't know what his stats are right now.

Griffen, Whipple, Benzel, Goulas, Bowman and Fontenot have all been impressive with the bats this fall. Most of these kids could make the roster.

Thanks for the update on today's game. I wasn't able to make it today for obvious reasons (WHO DAT!!!!).

I have been impressed with Benzel's play at 3B. He looks to be very solid defensively. He also swings the bat very well.

I was able to play a few games with Whipple this past summer and he showed some power in the few games that he played. But I was really surprised at the power he is showing this fall. The ball he hit Friday night was out the ball park by a mile.

I think Goulas & Bowman might get red-shirted just because we have to much upper classmen with tallent in the OF. But they will be our outfield of the future. Both can play!

Future is looking bright for Cajun baseball!

If Fontenot steps in at SS, we will have a hole. Very good glove and hands, good contact hitter, but below average arm for a SS. Plenty enough arm for 2nd.

That will be an interesting call. Robe loves Long, but so far I just don't see it.

LAFAYETTE – Black hit four home runs off Red starting pitcher Hunter Moody (Clinton, La.) en route to a 8-6 win in game five Wednesday night, moving one victory closer to Fall World Series bragging rights.

Black’s Leif Dubois (Gonzales, La.) earned the victory, despite allowing five runs on five hits through 5 1/3 innings. He also struck out five batters in his third appearance of the series. Blake Haagen (Athens, Ga.) recorded his first save of the classic, holding Red to one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

For the second time during the fall classic, Moody was shelled by the opposition, allowing seven runs – five earned – on nine hits through 4 1/2 innings of work. Four of Moody’s (0-2) nine hits allowed came via the home run ball.

Josh Logan (Magee, Miss.) went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, while Greg Fontenot (Lafayette, La.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

William Long (Valrico, Fla.) led Red with a 2-for-4 performance. Matt Hicks (Houston, Texas) also added two hits, while Scott Hawkins (Collierville, Tenn.) chipped in a home run and game-high three RBI.

Red jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Long led off with a single up the middle followed by a single to left field by Hicks. Long later scored on a wild pitch to give Red a one-run edge. Hicks then scored on Hawkins’ RBI ground out.

Black followed suit in the ensuing half inning, tying the game at two apiece. Thad Griffen (Lake Charles, La.) led off with a solo home run to right field, cutting the lead in half. Two batters later, Tyler Benzel (Groveland, Fla.) doubled down the left field line and later scored on a Michael Petitto (Amite, La.) RBI single to tie the game.

In the third inning, Black took its first lead of the game, 3-2, on Logan’s opposite field solo home run.

Red would regain its two-run advantage in the bottom of the third on one swing from Hawkins. With two outs, Hicks doubled down the left field line for Red’s first base runner of the inning. He later scored on a Chance Harst (Lafayette, La.) RBI single to right-center field. Then, Hawkins sent Dubois’ 0-1 delivery over the scoreboard, giving Red a 5-3 edge.

Red’s lead, however, would quickly vanish in the top half of the fourth inning. Benzel reached on a Hicks fielding error to lead off the frame. Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) followed with a double to left field. Goulas then scored on a fielder’s choice, while Benzel scored on a Moody throwing error to tie the game once again – this time at 5-5.

Black added two more runs in the fifth inning to take its largest lead of the night, 7-5. Nolan Gisclair (Marrero, La.) hammered Black’s third home run off Moody – a solo shot – for a 6-5 lead. Two batters later, Justin Robichaux (Crowley, La.) touched Moody for a fourth blast with a solo home run.

In the seventh, Black would add an insurance run to take an 8-5 lead. Haagen then shut the door on Red in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 8-6 win.

The Black team will look to capture the 13th Annual Red-Black Fall World Series crown Thursday with game six, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

I've made two of the games so far and will be there again tonight... I've focused on the freshmen and I think we have a lot to be excited about

Thad Griffin... Looks intimidating behind the plate... I think that was his second HR last night.. I saw his first.. a monster shot to almost dead center field.... Great addition

Whipple (?) I think he is fron Central Catholic MC but not sure... Seems real confident at the plate.. I know he has two home runs.. maybe more if I missed one

The kid from Lafayette High (I'm working strictly on memory here)... Good stick... Seems to have some presence and speed

The others I just don't remember but the Black team is mostly freshman and they are more than holding their own... Good speed this year

    Robe is reloading...

On the negative... and in these type games it seems for every positive one can find a negative right? lol.. but Moody seems to be getting hit pretty well... I dont worry too much however.. He is a gamer

    Very bright future baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I heard Tony say during the pre-series luncheon that due to the high quality of the freshman class, they extended it to a seven game series. BOP can probably correct me if I'm wrong as his ears may work better than mine.

Tonight (Thursday 11-8) Fontenot showed he has plenty of arm for SS. He may look small but there's a lot of talent in there!

Red’s three-year reign as Fall World Series champion is over. Justin Robichaux’s (Crowley, La.) RBI single in the fourth inning was all Black would need to capture bragging rights with a 1-0 triumph Thursday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Black won the series 4-2, winning games five and six.

Brent Solich (Lake Wood Ranch, Fla.) pitched a two-hit gem, striking a series-high 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings, to earn to his second victory of the six-game tilt. Gregory Harmon (Crowley, La.) nailed down the save, retiring the only batter he faced in the seventh.

Black’s Michael Cook (Lafayette, La.) was the hard-luck loser, allowing the game’s lone run on three hits, while striking out six batters through four innings. Senior reliever John Zorich (Stafford, Va.) held Black to just two hits over the final two innings.

Robichaux went 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI, while Tyler Benzel (Groveland, Fla.) recorded two of Black’s remaining three hits.

On the other side, Matt Hicks (Houston, Texas) and Scott Hawkins (Collierville, Tenn.) tallied Red’s only two hits.

Solich retired the first 10 batters he faced on the evening before Hicks delivered a one-out single up the middle in the top of the fourth. Two batters later, the senior surrendered a double to Hawkins which would have scored Hicks until he was thrown out at the plate on a perfect relay throw by Greg Fontenot (Lafayette, La.). From there, Solich retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced before being relieved by Harmon.

Black provided the game-winning run in the bottom half of the fourth. Nolan Gisclair (Marrero, La.) led off the frame by reaching base on a Hicks fielding error. After Gisclair stole second, Robichaux drove him in with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.

With the conclusion of fall practice, the defending Sun Belt Conference Regular Season champions will open up their 2008 schedule in San Antonio, Texas, at the UTSA Tournament Feb. 22-24.

Solich needs to be in the weekend rotation. I would put him in the place of Farquar. Farquar has already proven to be very very effective coming out out of the bullpen.
