  1. Ragin' Cajuns Gus Hauser Named To Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Gus Hauser, who has 11 years coaching experience at the collegiate level including stops at Louisville, New Mexico State, Coastal Carolina and Wofford, has been named assistant basketball coach at UL, effective Monday.

The hiring was announced by head coach Bob Marlin on Saturday and is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

"We are excited to add Gus Hauser to the Ragin' Cajuns coaching staff," Marlin said. "I have known him for eight years and I have always respected the way he conducts himself."

"Gus has a great track record working at some very accomplished programs over the last decade and will be able to help us in a number of ways. His recruiting contacts and basketball knowledge help to make him an effective recruiter and his ability to relate to players aids him in his one-on-one coaching. He will fit in well with our program."

Hauser has enjoyed success as an assistant coach, owning a 215-136 record that includes five seasons of 20 or more wins, three trips to the NCAA Championship and a pair of NIT appearances. Included in those totals was a trip to the NCAA Final Four as part of a 33-5 season while serving as a graduate assistant at Louisville in 2004-05.

Hauser joins the UL staff after spending the last two seasons (2011-13) at Wofford, helping the Terriers to 32 wins over his two seasons.

A 2000 graduate of Furman with a degree in religious philosophy, Hauser lettered in both basketball and football for the Paladins. As a point guard, he earned Southern Conference All-Academic honors while also being a member of the Dean's List.

Hauser started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Transylvania University in 2002-03, helping the team to a 13-11 record, an eight-win improvement from the season before.

From 2003-05, Hauser served as a graduate assistant on the staff of Rick Pitino at Louisville. He was part of teams that went 53-15 and appeared in two NCAA Championships, including the program's first Final Four trip since 1986.

Hauser moved to New Mexico State in 2005, working with head coach Reggie Theus to help the Aggies win 41 games over two seasons, including a 25-9 record and NCAA appearance in 2006-07.

When Theus left NMSU for the Sacramento Kings, Hauser moved to ULM for two seasons from 2007-09. While with the WarHawks, Hauser worked with the overall team defense, scouting, scheduling, recruiting and other operational aspects

From 2009-11, Hauser served as assistant coach at Coastal Carolina, helping the Chanticleers to two of the best seasons in Big South history, earning a pair of NIT appearances. In 2009-10, Coastal Carolina won the Big South regular season title and advanced to the championship game as part of a 28-7 season.

In 2010-11, the Chanticleers opened league play with a 15-game winning streak and went on to win its second straight league title, finishing the year with a 28-6 record.

Hauser and his wife, Amy, are the parents of a daughter, Presley Elizabeth (2). His father, Patrick Hauser, was a wide receiver at East Tennessee State before being drafted by the Miami Dolphins of the NFL in 1970.

Gus Hauser's bio at Coastal Carolina, pretty impressive:

    Very interesting quote:
"Coastal proved to be one of the top defensive teams in the country under Hauser's tutelage. The Chanticleers ranked first in the nation in three-point field goal defense by limiting opponents to a .275 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Coastal also stood fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense by holding teams to just 38.2 percent shooting from the field."

If Hauser can continue his coaching success at Louisiana, this could be a very exciting year for Ragin' Cajun basketball fans!
    Geaux Cajuns!

Did he teach Chris Gradnigo how to play defense?

I think the 2 will be improved with the return of Kevin Brown and if Mbamalu continues to improve like years past.
