So if he gets the $75K he pays taxes of??? and keeps how much---I know there will be some averaging in of past years etc but that money will be gone pretty quickly!!!

He will taxed at the bonus rate which is about 38%.
Best of luck to Kjerstad but I think if I were he and I am not, I would have rehabed and had another awesome season and looked for more money. $75,000 just is not a lot of money.
I hope all the best for Dex.
With that said...if the goal is short term, getting $75,000 was nice. The other stuff he'd have gotten anyway, so that's a wash. If the goal is long term, another year in college would have helped him further develop and...IMO...would have better positioned him to actually MAKE it at "the next level". He might have only gotten half the money up front (although he could have gotten much more with a great year)...but if the ultimate goal is the majors, he chances would have gone up.
Dex may actually be good enough to make it stick...even after leaving early. Most of the others over the years athat left early were not even close to ready.
UL is a National leader in low price/high value tuition.
Having said that, the Royals got off Scott free.
Having said that, the Royals did a great job of selling Dex something he already owned.
Having said that, I think this angle should be standard part of negotiations for any UL player contemplating leaving early.
I think it is pretty clear this young man has had enough of college. For some it is a great time in their lives, for others it is putting your life on hold.
$75,000 is a much better signing bonus than most if you realize. For a Sr. that is about 3rd signing bonus money.
Would you take a job earning $15G a year (over 5 years) not to go to college?
If you don't get the 2nd payday, that's what opting out amounts to.
Always wondered how this plays out with uncle Sam----he loses 38% of bonus (reported) so that is $46.5k left of the bonus----he can get 10--20% in the market if it keeps up or lose it all and maybe 5% or less in another investment----But what is his salary going to be ??? anybody know the answer???
Uncle Same could care less. His accountant on the other hand will adjust that income to the past years where he earned a lot less. It might even be enough to totally negate any taxes at this level.
Adam Angelle will be in the mix, and I have heard Evan Powell will be coming in. Powell is a former high school all-American catcher who signed with LSU out of high school. He spent this past season with LSUE, has good power and above average defense, but strikes out too much for me.
