He may have been referring to this official ULS "definitions" and bylaws (pdf file) that was created in 2001 and archived here on RP much later.

Yes, thanks for posting. Are these not considered the official names of the universities within the UL System?

Yes they are, but with UL being front and center on the topic for the last 15 years the official identity of those other Uats in the ULS has been swept under the rug.

Maybe it is time to lift the rug and let the dirt back front and center on the floor and take the focus off of us.

Yet the law states the city tag is only required when using the "University of Louisiana", it is very specific about that.

Additionally I am not reading that as the official names of the universities only their name an locations.

The "law" pertains only to any university with the "University of Louisiana" name. Thus far, only UL and ULM have the name. The UL System By-laws identify all of the members of the UL System and includes a city tag for each including UL Lafayette and UL Monroe. The question is, does the By-law of the UL System referencing those names make those official university names or just identifies the city in which they are located? This is separate and distinct from the "law", but if these names are official, they would carry an official name as we do, yet not required to use it, or at least have never used it. This could also be a reason the head of the UL System is not concerned about our not using our official name athletically. It would be interesting to find out if these are official names or just location identifiers.

In that document location is irrelevant, unless it is part of your name.

All the file did was name the schools.

No law says the other schools have to use their full name, so they don't.

If the process we used was not legal, then LA Tech's wasn't legal either. And, for that matter, neither was UNO's change from LSUNO. Why were we the only school that had to revert to its original name?

As you stated, we are the 2nd largest school in the state. Does anyone realize we are about the size of ULM and LA Tech combined? And, we are larger than all of the UL System universities combined (including Tech & ULM), in research and in endowment. We have unprecedented national exposure as the #1 baseball team in the country, #17 softball team in the country, NCAA basketball participant and National Defensive Player of the Year, and 3 time bowl winner. If we are ever going to capture "LOUISIANA", now is the time.
I agree with you 100%! Not only are we the largest but we are the second oldest in the system to LA Tech by just 4 years.

Here is something else to think about. Try searching for a colleges that are in a University of (state) you will notice a consistent theme in Wikipedia. Just about every college system has a "flagship" university that is defined by it's College Board. For example, University of Arkansas. The flagship university is University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and goes by just UA or Arkansas. This is extremely significant when it comes to athletic recruiting and academic recruiting.

    Here is Wikkipedia's defininition:

Unfortunately, our system does not have a "defined" flagship university.

HoustonCajun, As you mentioned, we now have national exposure because of our standings in all major sports. It's time to claim what should have been ours in the first place. Now is the best time to start a campaign to be recognized OFFICIALLY as University of Louisiana.

    Drop the "at Lafayette"!

Northwest State is the oldest university in the ULS.

Established long before UL or LTU@Ruston. NWSU established 1884.

Very true though it had a slightly different mission back then as it was considered a "Teachers College" although that was something UL morphed into as well.

I always wondered how names of schools were determined. I'm sure they had a reason for calling it the Louisiana State Normal School, but don't know the basis for the name.
