Thread: La Louisiane morphing into "at Lafayette" Magazine

Default La Louisiane morphing into "at Lafayette" Magazine

I received my copy of La Louisiane magazine this morning. Check out the article "Living our Brand" on page 22.

    http://communicationsandmarketing.lo...Summer2013.pdf

Why is the university brass pushing this "UL Lafayette" moniker through our promotional magazine?

My interpretation of the whole "name" saga is, based on the name "Louisiana" being awarded and then taken away from us by grape-and-yella politics 20 years ago, we should be making every effort to brand ourselves with the "clean" nickname and readily-identifiable moniker, "Louisiana." This branding effort works through social media; my friends not associated with the school use "Louisiana" because I use the term. They then spread it.

Yes, our official name is "The University of Louisiana at Lafayette," just like "The University of California at Berkeley." This doesn't stop them from the "clean" nickname of "Cal" or "California." It should be the same here.

This seems self-defeating. Students and faculty are influenced by this slick, well-laid-out magazine.

Why are they pushing this local "UL Lafayette" moniker that 1) obscures even the city since there is a Lafayette, Indiana, a Lafayette College, etc. and 2) TOTALLY obscures the state we represent?

I wish administration, sports information, faculty, students and media were all on the same page pushing the "University of Louisiana" brand. As it is, it looks like the university magazine--and administration--didn't get the memo.

You cant push "University of Louisiana" brand. For academics its always been UL Lafayette. For athletics its just "Louisiana"

I guess then we should drop the "U" from UL and just refer to ourselves as "L".

Cal does refer to themselves as Cal-Berkeley when it comes to academics

Y'all are way too sensitive about this "Name" thing. It was a mistake to change name from USL back in the 90's.

In La' Louisiane they take stupid to the next level. I once read "UL Lafayette" 5 times in the span of 2 paragraphs. Typist forbid they use a common everyday reference.

They can't bring themselves to say UL or Louisiana but somehow "the University" is acceptable.

"Louisiana" is a nick name just like "Ragin' Cajuns."

That is the problem "UL" says nothing it is just a nick name. You couple a nick name with a town and you get zero branding value, especially when the town name is one of the most commonly used Nation wide.

They could use the phrase "University of Louisiana" if they wanted to, just not on letter heads, every program at UL is part of the "University of Louisiana" System. Every graduate has a degree from the "University of Louisiana" System.

To make matters worse, I have seen them use "UL Lafayette" and then use "LSU" in the same paragraph. There is no university officially named LSU. This is supposed to be our magazine and this is what they do.

    Yes.

Only, not just L, but we should say "Louisiana" at ALL times when talking about our university.

We need to stop using UL. By using that, we give our enemies an opening to refute us with the law.

Like someone said in an earlier post, UC Berkeley fans understood this. They just use California, or Cal for short reference.

    LOUISIANA is the brand.

"We are LOUISIANA" is the message.

    I just had a great idea for a T-Shirt.

"We are LOUISIANA" on the front.

    "Forget U" on the back.

    You're partially correct.

The letters USL could have stayed. The name should have been changed to South Louisiana. This would have been sooo much easier.

It's funny. People think Cajun fans are arrogant in using the UL reference or dropping the city tag. It wasn't the athletic department or the fans that wanted this name change like this, it was the Academic people. If this decision were left up to fans, it would have happened a lot differently.

No it was no mistake but I often wonder why the University of South Louisiana wasn't seriously considered. I guess the same schools that blocked UL wouldn't have like that name either.
