Louisiana junior Elfrid Payton saved his best tournament game for last, scoring nine points with six assists and five steals as Team USA broke used a 13-1 fourth quarter run to break open a close game and topple Serbia, 82-68, to win the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championship on Sunday.

You noticed ... it is also white ... that means they went UNDEFEATED throughout the entire tournament.

Sunday was a bad day for Serbia indoors and outdoors.

Elfrid Payton is on the cover of the current edition of Basketball Times!

National headline from the Bo Lamar era.

    "There's No Cagin The Cajuns"

"Cager" being a basketball term, I love the double dribble on words.

Which is also why I loved it when RAGE "CAGE" (again basketball term) won the UL Student Body poll for naming the student section.

No, my editor John Akers wrote it. I pitched the story idea over the summer after Elfrid made the U-19 team. My editor later asked if I had a problem if he wrote it as a part of a bigger preseason package that Basketball Times does every year on potential breakout players, and I told him go for it (in part because I was finishing another big project for another publication at the time). Last year North Texas forward Tony Mitchell was the Basketball Times cover boy for the same preseason issue. I did write that story.

Basketball Times is a print-only edition (no web), so if you want a copy go here: http://www.basketballtimes.com/Subscription.aspx. Mr. Aker's contact info is at the bottom of this link: http://www.basketballtimes.com/about...all-times.aspx

Josh, I'm trying to find out who wrote the Sun Belt preview for Athlon Sports. There is no credit that I can find in the magazine itself. Can you help with that?

I remember that article! It was actually Bobby Pascale era...

1982 Sports Illustrated after we started the season winning the Great Alaskan Shoot-Out (beat #1 ranked Georgetown, then Washington State, then Marquette for the championship.). Huge reception back at Lafayette Airport when they came home.

Our AP ranking was 13th in the country before we lost to Memphis State and then one other team and fell out of top 20.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane! Great team.
