Beau, I have family in Ft. Smith; the drive to Fayetteville through Ft. Smith is scenic, but not quick. Here to Shreveport is fine and from Texarkana on is as well. Shreveport to Texarkana is not so good. It HAS been a while since I made the trip, though. It may be better now.

That being said, I would go that way rather than through Little Rock.

I'm from the Texarkana area and went to school in Fayetteville back in the dark ages. Unless I had family I was going to visit in Little Rock, I would definitely take the straight shot through Texarkana and Fort Smith. I-40 from LR to Alma is no picnic either. One of the roughest stretches of interstate I have ever driven.

Hwy 71 north of Shreveport isn't great, but not far after you cross the state line you hit what will some year be I-49. Gets easier then.

That is the most direct route and very scenic. Also a route with a lot of two lane mountain (curvy) highways. Be prepared to go a little slow at times. Very scenic. Going through Little Rock is a lot out of the way but is mostly interstate. I am going through Texarkana and Fort Smith. I would suggest an overnight stay at the Queen Wilhemina Hotel on the peak of Rich Mountian outside of Mena or the Mount Magazine Lodge near Paris if you can get there on the way up or on the way back. Both are run by the Arkansas State Parks System. Because of the Labor Day holidays they may already be booked. Also try to stop in Altus, Arkansas (just off 1-30 near Ozark) and taste the wines at Mt. Bethel Winery. Definitely worth the stop. Sunday after the game take a short drive to Eureka Springs a village that will take you back to the 1920's.
Lots of stuff to do on the way up and on the way back regardless of which way you go.
