UL to convert 2 lanes of St Mary Blvd into bike lanes

can somebody explain like where this will be.....is it an extension from the horticulture building??????

Not sure of the exact route, but it will basically run from Ira Nelson to campus.

Guessing but maybe accessing St. Michael from the backside of Ira Nelson, to St. Julien, to Stephens, to Lewis, and then crossing Johnston. It would also provide a bridge across the coulee. This would be using a striping and signage to delineate shared usage.

I think the approximate dollar amount of the grant is $456,000 and UL is putting up around $50,000 as a match.

To answer the other question, yes, the conversation about a "Mickey Shunik Bikeway" has already begun. And if I'm correct, could be more than just this route.

The existing bike path is about 9200+ feet now. Just along Johnston is about 1400 feet. Adding another 1500 feet want reach the main campus. At least I don't think it will........Let's check google earth.......

Checked google earth. If they cross Johnston at the Harticulture Center and go to St Julien Ave and use the bike path along Johnston, that's about 900 feet. To the coulee and bridge across to Cajun Village you have about another 750 feet. That might be the route they will take.

That's more than 1500 ft. It's about 2700+ ft. to the where they want to put a bridge. And that's cutting it short. Going on St. Michael will be going through a single housing street. Crossing Johnston St by the Horticulture center and going down Johnston St. that already have a bike path that can be widen with a curb to St. Julien and right to the coulee would be between 1500/1600 ft.

In the Master plan for the university there was even a storage area to be erected at Cajun Field to pick up one's bike to use to go to campus---Ergo a huge "bike push" for the future!!!

A Lafayette Consolidated Government plan to lengthen the University Common bike path will provide a direct connection between the main campus and University Common.

The existing two-mile path along Cajundome Boulevard, which has been in place since the fall of 2011, spans two points between Eraste Landry Road and Johnston Street.

As part of the extension project, the path will be extended from where it ends on Johnston Street, near the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center, all the way to East Lewis Street.

The new section will encompass a route via St. Michael and St. Julien streets. The extended path will travel through Youth Park and carry over St. John coulee.

The project also includes plans to install shared roadway signage and pavement markings along Reinhardt Drive.

In total, the work will result in about 1.25 miles of new bike pathways.

Construction is scheduled to start next year, with a target date of late spring, said Joey Benoit, a planner with Lafayette Consolidated Government.

“We’re hoping to have the extension completed during the fall of 2014, hopefully in September or October,” Benoit said.

The University Common bike path as it now exists was funded with a $1 million Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant.

The extension work will be funded with a $450,000 Federal Transit Administration grant, to which UL Lafayette added about $50,000, Benoit said.

The funds are provided by the Federal Transit Administration's Bus Livability Initiative and the grant was awarded on a competitive basis to the city of Lafayette. according to a recent press release issued by the office of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.

Another federally-funded LGC project will link the existing University Common with a more than 1-mile stretch that will stop at the existing Parc Sans Souci trailhead.

Work on that project is anticipated to begin sometime later this year.
