I'm a biker and a huge supporter of bike lanes but TWO WHOLE LANES for bikes? That's a bit much don't you think?
I think it may be as much about reducing traffic on the road as it is for accomodating bicylists.
They will be SOOOO many bikes on the new UL look campus you won't believe it----Even the commuters will have their bikes stored at Cajun Field to ride to campus where there will be bike racks coming out the Whaaazoo!!!
That... and I think it's probably much safer and enforceable to have the bicycle lanes directionally designated. A buddy of mine that was at UL with me in the 80s smashed into a female pedestrian on the UL campus with his bicycle, and it was a much bigger ordeal than you can imagine.
She was that big???
Yet another construction project is in the works at UL.
Next spring, construction will begin on phase two of the bike path extension. Phase one is a bike path along Cajundome Boulevard going from Eraste Landry to Johnston Street. Phase two will connect the existing path with the main campus.
Bicyclists say it's an exciting time on campus. John Heinemann cycles to UL everyday for class. He says navigating campus can be a challenge.
"It would be awesome if bikers had a safe lane and didn't have to worry about cars."
Heinemann has noticed an increased number of students and faculty riding to campus. He says cycling has it's advantages. "Parking is hard and it's expensive, that's why I ride my bike. It's easier and convenient."
UL School of Architecture and Design Director, Thomas Sammons says, "We just want to make sure our students have the best mobility rather than always having to get into a car."
The goal is to connect the bike path that ends at the Horticulture Center on Johnston Street to phase two on the main campus UL.
Any other streets to be done this way in and around campus?
The Lafayette City-Parish Council is expected to consider on Tuesday partnering with the University of Louisiana to create bicycle lanes along St. Mary Boulevard.
